And as soundtracks go, Phosphenes \u0026amp; Allegories presents a range of emotions, ambiguities, questions, and soundscapes all united by Becker’s distinctive guitar levitating within. 'I’ve mainly worked as a songwriter until this release,' he explains, 'so I’ve long craved breaking away from that world and making something purely instrumental.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003ePhosphenes \u0026amp; Allegories remained a private set of bedroom experiments for some time. As the quarantine in 2020 began, Becker needed a creative outlet and so pulled out his Tascam 4-track to begin documenting blurry fragments as a kind of time capsule. 'I was also watching a lot of art films and reading a lot of science fiction,' he says. Exits, his debut release for Atlantic Rhythms, is the culmination of a year of compositional experimentation, personal growth, and deep introspection. The album’s live improvisations explore the spaces between environmental music, video game soundtracks, and deep listening.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003ePearl’s approach to composition is highly influenced by his training in computer science as well as a deep appreciation for the world-building of video games. “Musical systems can often feel like worlds of their own,” says Pearl, “balancing the intellectual process of designing systems with the more emotional world of improvisation and melodic\/harmonic composition.” Urner’s Exits intentionally brings that balance to bear in eight compositions building a world unto its own – a musical system as Pearl sees it. “I enjoy getting lost in video games,” according to Pearl, “and find a lot of creative inspiration from the entire experience of visuals, audio, gameplay, design, etc.”\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eStarting in April 2020, Pearl started cataloging live improvisations. After nearly a year of documenting, Exits began to take shape through editing and consolidating that bank of archival material. By the summer of 2021, a cohesive piece of work emerged in\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e the form of the eight compositions on Exits. Much of Exits was recorded at Pearl’s home studio with mostly digital gear\/processes like buffer manipulation and live looping. Video games, an aesthetic influence that looms large in the DNA of Urner, would be on a nearby screen muted while Pearl worked through the composition process to avoid getting caught up in the visuals of the software\/hardware used to perform.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eExits, according to Pearl, 'Feels like a checkpoint before I venture outwards into the next phase of my creative practice. Exits, his debut release for Atlantic Rhythms, is the culmination of a year of compositional experimentation, personal growth, and deep introspection. The album’s live improvisations explore the spaces between environmental music, video game soundtracks, and deep listening.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003ePearl’s approach to composition is highly influenced by his training in computer science as well as a deep appreciation for the world-building of video games. “Musical systems can often feel like worlds of their own,” says Pearl, “balancing the intellectual process of designing systems with the more emotional world of improvisation and melodic\/harmonic composition.” Urner’s Exits intentionally brings that balance to bear in eight compositions building a world unto its own – a musical system as Pearl sees it. “I enjoy getting lost in video games,” according to Pearl, “and find a lot of creative inspiration from the entire experience of visuals, audio, gameplay, design, etc.”\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eStarting in April 2020, Pearl started cataloging live improvisations. After years of lively sessions and discussions across the New York improvised music scene; Jessica Ackerley (guitar), Eli Wallace (piano), and Frank Meadows (bass) considered it a requirement to document a convergence before Ackerley’s looming move to Hawaii. Up to that point in the pandemic, collaboration and indoor group improvising had been severely limited, and much remained uncertain. What would have once been an artistic gesture packed within busy schedules felt in context like a glass of water in the desert, an impossibly rare and necessary opportunity. The ambient chaotic energy of that\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e time was sharpened during set-up when the trio and engineer René Pierre Allain received news that Donald Trump had tested positive for COVID-19. The resultant headspace became an unhinged cocktail of joy, nostalgia, caution, absurdity, anxiety, and renewed invigoration. Fiercely kinetic splashes of conceptual frameworks and material exploration emerged in an urgent yet tempered group dynamic that recognized both the weight and the levity of the meeting. The result are recordings that set the tone for a new, unique group identity that has prompted continued collaboration and discussion. Ruminating on a dry season marred by devastating bushfires led Ahmad to start writing the A Body Full Of Tears album. Plunged into isolation and confronting the trauma of environmental degradation and pandemic realities, Ahmad decided to continue exploring and started to create a space for long-form, meditative compositions. That space was also important for processing the new, lockdown realities of working from home and wrangling two homeschooled children.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eAhmad performed these new mediations, the Breather sessions, in the middle of the day and live-streamed them so people could tune in and meditate and reflect along with the music while they had lunch, read a book, or work. As life started to go back to “normal” – the kids were back in school and Ahmad was back in the office – the Breather concept died down for a bit. In late 2020, she was given a grant that covered lost income from live performance in return for creating a body of work with the Breather concept. This time rather than do something durational, Ahmad played with the idea of using simple 10-second videos from her surroundings creating shorter works that could play as\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\" class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e infinite loops.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThese loops, when collected together, could be randomized to dovetail in and out of a playlist with a sense of endlessness. These works drew on a sound palette recorded for many previous projects over the years but reshaped and contorted into new forms, many unfamiliar with the artists who performed them with Ahmad. Shoeb Ahmad invented the Breather project during the peak blockade of the Australian continent.Ruminating the dry season, which was hit by a devastating wildfire, Ahmad began writing the album "A Body Full Of Tears."Faced with isolation, environmental destruction and pandemic trauma, Ahmad decided to continue his quest and began to create space for long-term meditative composition.The space was also important to handle the new closed reality of working from his home and having two children with remote learning.Ahmad held this new mediation, the Breather Session, during the day and streamed it live.Breather's concept went down a bit as life began to return to "normal," with children returning to school and Ahmad returning to the office. Senses play a significant role in this daring collaboration between percussionist Shayna Dunkelman and composer Javier Areal Vélez. Combining a playful exploration of the senses with phonological connections between Spanish and Japanese languages, ‘Miru Mira’ takes inspiration and finds connection through linguistics and sound.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eShayna and Javier’s collaboration was slow to materialize, taking nearly ten years. The two improvisers first met in New York at a concert in 2012 and then later reconnected in Argentina in 2017. Javier organized a visit of Shayna's band at the time (Xiu Xiu) to perform at RUIDO, an experimental music series he curates. Eventually, the two improvisers resolved to play together and a plan to record materialized quickly and organically. The physicality of his interactions with the guitar create estranged sonic entities that evolve haphazardly outside of specific genres. In the later years, his solo work has included also the development of AI entities that listen and improvise with Javier via the use of samples, synthesis and mechanical robots. Javier has performed concerts in Argentina, America, Europe and Asia, and has released recordings in a dozen independent labels worldwide as a soloist, band member, and through collaborations with artists such as Violeta García, Chris Pitsiokos, Audrey Chen, Brian Chase, Shayna Dunkelman, Nicola Hein, Ryoko Ono and Jorge Espinal. Javier is the founder and director of RUIDO experimental music festival since its inception in 2017. He is also the coordinator of the Sound Arts Center (CASo) of the Ministry of Culture of Argentina.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eShayna Dunkelman is a musician and percussionist based in Brooklyn, NY. Dunkelman is known for her versatile and unique techniques, and use of electronics to access a sonic pallet not found in acoustic percussion. In addition to solo performances, Dunkelman performs with Pulitzer Award-winning composer Du Yun, Balún, Emily Wells, Grammy Award-Winning Attacca Quartet, Ali Sethi, and her percussion duo Nomon with her sister Nava. Born and raised in Tokyo to an Indonesian mother and an American father, Dunkelman became a multi-instrumentalist performing alongside her mother. Dunkelman became increasingly active in the alternative music scene as a member of the band Xiu Xiu, touring the world for 6 years. As part of Xiu Xiu, Dunkelman shared stages with Genesis P-Orridge (Psychic TV), Sun Ra Arkestra, Alessandro Cortini (Nine Inch Nails) to name a few.
