This is a record released by Sam Dunscombe, an experimental musician from Berlin, Germany, on the Australian experimental label Black Truffle in November 2023.Contains two sound collage/drone songs processed from field recordings of the forest and the sea.Below is an explanation by the label. Two Forests begins in a redwood forest in central California.Bird songs and insect calls are processed with various time-based processing methods (slicing and recombination, primitive granular synthesis, delay, etc.) to remove the linear, documentary character from field recordings and to reduce traces and echoes. reconstructed in a fascinating web. Dunscombe analyzed the pitches contained in the original recording and generated a large set of just-intonated pitches. These sounds are slowly woven into the field recordings, gradually increasing in density and complexity, transforming the forest into a surreal space of infinite proportions. At the end of the song, we break out of this cosmic expanse and find ourselves in the Amazon rainforest outside Manaus, Brazil. As Dunscombe writes, the work creates "a strange sense of place, where space and time simultaneously expand and contract across octaves, miles, and minutes." On Oceanic, various beach recordings fade in and out, the rhythm of the waves and the depth and distance of each recording creating a homogeneous yet ever-changing texture. The tones, related in simple proportions to the average rhythm of each beach, overlap each other, coloring the field recording's white noise texture with shifting hues.In both works, Dunscombe rejects the easy consonance of contemporary ambient music in favor of richer harmonic arrangements derived from extended tuning practices and spectralism. The result suggests a hitherto undreamed-of encounter between the rolling sonic masses of Radulesque and the sparingly processed location recordings of Ivtaiber's "psychologically extreme" Environments. .Beyond the narrow-mindedness that can plague experimental music culture, Dunscombe's work makes a moving case for the healing power of a wide-ranging approach to sound and music.Beyond psychedelic therapy, frequent immersion in Two Forests/Oceanic is almost certain to have psychologically beneficial results. This is the latest record released in September 2022 by influential experimental musician Alvin Curran.Below is a description of the label. Black Truffle are excited to announce Drumming Up Trouble, the label's first ever unreleased material from Alvin Curran. Collecting material recorded between 9 and 2018, and, as the title suggests, dating back to the early '2021s, Drumming Up Trouble is the little-known so far of Curran's encyclopedic and omnivorous musical universe. It focuses on the missing side, experimenting with sampling and synthesizer percussion. As Curran's brilliant, gritty liner notes make clear, his fascination with drumming belongs to a radical investigation into the fundamental elements of music that have characterized his work since the early days of MEV. , as he said in a recent interview, aims to return "in some collective way to a non-existent starting point in the history of human music."Whatever music our ancestors played, he wrote, "drums were front row and center of the mix. Drums rule!" In a typical Curran paradoxical approach, Drumming Up Trouble revisits the music's oldest dimensions with modern technology. On the front side, you'll hear some of Curran's most recent work performed using sampling software and a full-size MIDI keyboard setup that he's refined since the 80s.Two of the songs are mostly wild real-time improvisations, drawing on huge hip-hop sample banks. From polyrhythmic layers of drum machine snippets to wild cacophony of clashes, scratches and frantic pitch-shifts of vocal samples, these energetic and sometimes comical productions feature John Oswald's Plunderphonics and Tony Oxley Quartet's Pat...
