British post-industrial artist Heavy Cloud released this cassette in January 2023 on the British experimental/noise label Brachliegen Tapes.
Includes two collage noise tracks that are over-processed field recordings. Comes with DL code.Below is an explanation by the label.
"SCREE is a slab of two ferocious tones from HEAVY CLOUD inspired by the immense natural forces acting on the Cornish coastline. The ebb and flow of the tides and the searing sunshine span 2 minutes of heavy electronics. destroys, erodes, and burns the ever-changing terrain of this country's unstable fringes.SCREE is two noise "land scrapes" with motifs of the Cornish Coastline, eroded Formed over time from loops, voices, processed field recordings and picked-up sounds.
HEAVY CLOUD states that a scree is geologically defined as an accumulation of loose stones or rock fragments lying at the bottom of a slope, hill or cliff.The formation of scree deposits is the result of physical and chemical weathering, with material carried downhill by erosion processes acting on the rock face.Nothing is physically lost in this process, but the terrain is seismically altered.The whole disperses and shatters, forming numerous fragments, the body is transmitted in multiple ways, and its voice echoes in the terrain.Nature's cyclical regeneration is forced to repeat itself and continues incessantly, but its presence is comforting.
HEAVY CLOUD makes use of harsh looping sounds, repeating, scraping, and relentlessly downstream noises like drones and screeches. SCREE is a sound representation of the environmental and cultural encroachments affecting the British landscape.Ghostly voices murmur in processed tones in plumes that are blown out to sea and collapse on rocks.Much of the sound changes direction and tone abruptly, mimicking the weather and tidal patterns of the Cornish coastline.Sounds circulate rapidly and relentlessly, some fleeting, some constantly changing, like the undertow of our daily thought processes.
The titles of the two feature films that make up SCREE are taken from passages from Sylvia Plath's Unabridged Journals of Sylvia Plath:
The sun has baked these rocks, and the tides have been so great that they have crumbled and beaten, and become like smooth sun-baked stones on the beach, and when one walks upon them, they rattle underfoot. Make a noise and move."
What's more, Plath says, comes over her with a "quiet sense of slow inevitability, where the crust is gradually changing."But this feeling is not a joy or a spiritual awakening, but rather a "clean discontinuity in which nameless rocks, nameless waves, nameless tattered grasses are defined for a moment by the consciousness of the being who observes them." It's a sense of nothingness.Landscapes are constantly renewed, changing, shifting, and often beyond human comprehension.It does so despite constant anthropocentric categorization and destruction.And they will continue to do so long after humanity and its malevolent influence have decayed to dust. With SCREE, HEAVY CLOUD explores these themes through its approach to noise along with nature's elemental tones, mineral deposits and crushing forces. "

SCREE is a pair of noise 'landscrapes' in-spirited by the Cornish coastline, formed over time from eroding loops and voices, processed field recordings and found sounds.

HEAVY CLOUD utilizes a range of harsh looping sonics, repeating, abrading and relentlessly channeling the undertow through pummelling drones and screeching noise. SCREE is a sonic interpretation of the environmental and cultural erosion affecting the English landscape. Haunted voices murmur through the processed tones of elemental powers, blown off to sea and spat back against the rocks in a spray of disintegrating spume. Vast swatches of sound change direction and tone abruptly, imitating the shifting weather and tidal patterns of the Cornish coastline. processes, sounds circle rapidly and relentlessly; some fleeting but others constant and erring.
The two long-form compositions that constitute SCREE take their titles from passages of the Unabridged Journals of Sylvia Plath:
'The sun has burned these rocks, and the great continuous ebb and flow of the tide has crumbled the boulders, battered them, worn them down to the smooth sun-scalded stones on the beach which rattle and shift underfoot as one walks over them' .
Plath goes on to observe that 'a serene sense of the slow inevitability of the gradual changes in the earth's crust' comes over her. This feeling, however, is not one of joy or spiritual awakening, but 'the clean unbroken sense that the rocks , which are nameless, the waves which are nameless, the ragged grass, which is nameless, are all defined momentarily through the consciousness of the being who observes them.' The landscape constantly renews itself, changing and shifting, often doing so beyond human comprehension It does so in spite of ceaseless anthropocentric categorization and destruction, and will continue to do so, long after humankind and its malevolent effects decay and turn to dust. With SCREE, HEAVY CLOUD explores these themes via an approach to noise that aligns itself to the elemental tones of nature, its mineral deposits and pulverizing force"
