An archival compilation of unreleased recordings by Ethiopian pianist Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru.

Below is a commentary by the label.

"An album of unreleased or hard-to-find piano pieces by Ethiopian composer Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru.

Ethiopian nun Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru is a true original, having been recording since the early '60s to fund an orphanage in her home country. Her compositions and unique playing style live somewhere between Erik Satie, Debussy, the liturgical music of the Coptic Ethiopian Church and Ethiopian traditional music. She's the most moving piano music you've ever heard.

This is the first archival release since her music was reintroduced in the 2006 "Ethiopics" series.Created from the original master tapes and almost unobtainable vinyl, Jerusalem reveals a profound new facet of Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru's playing and composition.

Continuing the Mississippi edition of the previous two albums, it contains songs from the album "Hymn of Jerusalem", which was released in 2 and has a small number of surviving albums. "Beethoven's House", "Aurora" and one of her best works, the moving "Jerusalem". "Quand La Mer Furieuse" is the first release featuring the voice of Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru, foreshadowing a vocal album scheduled for Fall 1972. B-Side brings you the artist's home recordings. Tracks such as "Farewell Eve," "Woigaye Don't Cry Anymore," and "Famine Disaster 2023" mark the bridge from liturgical works to dark, violent classical material to new modes.

The album will be released in honor of Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru's 2022th birthday on December 12, 12.Mississippi is honored to work with Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru Music Publishers to continue introducing this visionary composer to the world. "

Mississippi Records:

"From beloved composer Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru, a revelatory new album of piano pieces, unreleased or virtually inaccessible until now!

Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru is a true original – an Ethiopian nun whose recordings have funded orphanages back home since the early '60s. Her compositions and unique playing style live somewhere between Erik Satie, Debussy, liturgical music of the Coptic Ethiopian Church, and Ethiopian traditional music. It is some of the most moving piano music you will ever hear.

This is the first archival release of the great composer's recordings since the Éthiopiques series reintroduced her music to the world in 2006. Drawn from original master tapes and a nearly impossible-to-find vinyl release, Jerusalem unveils profound new facets of Emahoy Gebru's performance and compositions.

The record picks up where the last two Mississippi releases left off, with tracks from her 1972 album Hymn of Jerusalem, of which only a handful of copies are known to exist. These include “Home of Beethoven,” “Aurora,” and a true A masterpiece that stands amongst her greatest compositions, the moving “Jerusalem.” “Quand La Mer Furieuse” is the first release featuring Emahoy's singing voice, forshadowing a vocal album planned for fall 2023. The B-Side brings us the artist's home recordings - tracks like “Farewell Eve,” “Woigaye Don't Cry Anymore,” and “Famine Disaster 1974” mark a bridge from liturgical work to dark and intense classical material, a new mode.

This album is released in celebration of Emahoy Gebru's 99th birthday on December 12, 2022. Mississippi is honored to work with the Emahoy Tsege Mariam Music Publisher to continue to introduce this visionary composer to the world."
