As well as sound installations, film scores and collaborations (making up one half of Den Osynliga Manteln), Ola has an ongoing solo project called Osynliga Rum, or Invisible Room, which is also the title of the first record coming out of this project. Invisible Room circles around the idea of using music making and sound as ways to explore the audible qualities of architecture, while also using architecture to explore sound, and having it guide and shape the music being made. Sandberg was influenced and inspired by, to name a few, Paul Horn's sonic experiments in both Inside the Taj Mahal and Inside the Great Pyramid, Pauline Olivero playing in a huge underground silo in Deep Listening, and Alvin Lucier's acoustic explorations in I Am Sitting in a Room.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eInvisible room was created and recorded in St John’s Church in Malmö during March of 2021 using a modular, analog synthesiser, speakers and microphones. Building on the premise that the essence of a room, the space it holds, is invisible but audible — the music was created with the purpose of exploring and\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\" class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e\u003cem\u003e activating the sonic aspects of the room, aiming for a non hierarchical relationship between room and sound. Up and down streets like this, walking on beaches and proms, aimless, directionally ignorant me taking walks, early morning walks turning once familiar places into unfamiliar atmospheres. And with that change, I noticed something new that I had never seen before, or that I had never seen before. I spent a lot of time experimenting with sequencing and different bits of hardware I'd acquired. I was also playing around with an old four track cassette recorder, which was loads of fun. I think the end result feels a little broader in sound and composition as all but one of these tracks were the result of recording a live jam down to a stereo mix. I recorded dozens of these until I'd found 'the one'.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eThat way of capturing a performance really excites me, it's like a crystallised moment in time when the planets have aligned. When you're really absorbed into the flow of it and there's something extra guiding you.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eThematically, it all reflects this ongoing interest I have in consciousnesses, spiritual enlightenment, truth realisation, whatever you want to call it. At the time I'd been reading a lot about advaita, which is Sanskrit for 'not two', or what western spiritual teachers call non-duality, where it's seen there is no separation between anything, no individual self, no subject and object, just this infinite eternal consciousness. I read a few of the classic\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e\u003cem\u003e teachings from gurus such as Ramaana Maharishi, Jiddu Krishnamurti and Nisargadatta Maharaj, which reflect modern accounts of contemporary teachers like Richard Rose, Jan, Frazier and Rupert Spira.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eThere seems to be this slow reconciliation between ancient eastern spiritual teachings and western psychology and neuroscience. I think the end result feels a little broader in sound and composition as all but one of these tracks were the result of recording a live jam down to a stereo mix. I read a few of the classic\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e\u003cem\u003e teachings from gurus such as Ramaana Maharishi, Jiddu Krishnamurti and Nisargadatta Maharaj, which reflect modern accounts of contemporary teachers like Richard Rose, Jan, Frazier and Rupert Spira.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eThere seems to be this slow reconciliation between ancient eastern spiritual teachings and western psychology and neuroscience. These quickly became a form of torture to me, something that the CIA might use in covert operations to flush out a drug cartel from their hideout. It became apparent that there was a desperate need for informative songs and music that were appealing and bearable for both children and their parents.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003e“I recruited my friend Kevin Pearce, (who I have\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e\u003cem\u003e produced and collaborated with on various projects over the years), to bounce ideas off and who could put together a nice series of chords and could sing! Which helps when writing songs. Kevin is from an acoustic folk background and I'm more of a one finger synth player in the Human League tradition. I thought it would be interesting to mix the folk and electronic element together for children’s songs.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003e“We then recruited various artists to sing on the tracks including PsychFolk singer Sharron Kraus, performance artist Heidi Kilpaleinen (HK119), synth goddess Tara Busch, artist and ex Add N to X man Steven Claydon and vocalists Liza Violet and Tom O'Hara.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003e“Kevin and I are both interested in science and astronomy so that was the obvious direction for the album. Writing songs about various scientific subjects was interesting and a challenge. Aiming them at children meant that we didn't need a PHD for the lyrics. It became more about conveying a sense of wonder and presenting some amazing facts to audience.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003e“In 2018 we were asked by Sheffield University to work on a live version of the album and to collaborate with some of their senior scientists on the project. This turned The Sound of Science into a live performance spectacular involving scientific experiments on stage, a live band performing the songs, plus 3D visuals created by Human in Sheffield. We performed 3 shows over two days and the reaction from kids and their parents was amazing.
