Pressed at RTI for maximum fidelity with a full color printed inner sleeve.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eThese companion pieces have similar orbits as they were not only both composed in Middletown, CT (where Alvin and Jordan lived for a number of years), but are about Middletown, at least from a starting point. Alvin’s piece — a homage to the location of the house in which he recorded “I am sitting in a room” back in 1969 — continues his study into slow-moving glissandi and carefully crafted beating patters by interweaving three string players within a minor third (voiced by two vibraphonists). The result is entrancing, almost psychedelic, and opens space where one didn’t expect. Like much of his previous work, it is conceptual and process-based; once the wheels get turning they go on and on, giving the listener time to approach the piece, sit with it, and then move back inward.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eOn the other hand, Dykstra’s piece “32 Middle Tones” (a pun on his Middletown street address and the harmonic microtonality utilized in the composition) is a very textural work. His piece asks the cellist to sustain pitches for extended durations — at times\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e\u003cem\u003e quietly singing in close proximity to the stopped pitch coming from the cello — while the rest of the ensemble (violin, viola, and 2 percussion) voice a sequence of chords separated by notated silences. The cello voice is sometimes alone, but never for too long as it finds itself supported from both the top and bottom in a harmonic embrace. This supportive structure involves a percussion section which colors the seemingly simple chords (major 6th, inverted minor 7th, inverted minor 2nd, etc.) with a non-traditional toolkit of bowed singing bowls, stone sheets, harmonicas, and even leaves.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eThis is music that gently gives the listener a sense of predictability but always in an unexpected (and subtly indeterminate) shade. Speaking of shade, the album’s cover photo was taken in 2019 in Alvin’s backyard in Middletown. The bee’s language consists of a dance, itself a roadmap to fertile flower fields. In honeycombs, the colour of the pollen indicates the flowers living in the wider area: in the hive, a whole landscape is mapped out. A bee is always part of something larger, of its colony but also of society at large. As\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003ea cultivated insect, bees have lived together with humans for around eight thousand years. Could it be that bees have a lot to tell us?\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eThe story of the bees starts with the lifespan of a single bee. This immediately forced me to invent my approach to cinematic representation; bees are difficult to depict. They hide in the darkness of their hives; opened up, hundreds of bodies are seen wriggling together. The complexity of the subject led me to an essayistic approach.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eGlobes began as a narrative in which the invisible is gradually rendered visible. Soon my story began to interweave with that of others; bees take on a role in many histories. I ended up\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e in Slovenia, a country with a tradition of depicting hives containing biblical stories, mythological figures and even news from the surrounding area. In North America, bees are deeply enmeshed in the story of modernity. In plantations reaching to the horizon, masked beekeepers are reminiscent of space travelers trying to maintain artificial ecologies on a barren planet. The title refers to a notion of ‘worlds’, of which the earth comprises many. The documentary considers our globalised economy, but also the landscapes around the beehive. The micro-level is thus always connected to the macro-level, the local to the global. In Globes, bonds are forged between culture and nature and the ways in which the concept of 'ecology' can be given meaning are explored. This immediately forced me to invent my approach to cinematic representation; bees are difficult to depict. They hide in the darkness of their hives; opened up, hundreds of bodies are seen wriggling together. The complexity of the subject led me to an essayistic approach.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eGlobes began as a narrative in which the invisible is gradually rendered visible. Soon my story began to interweave with that of others; bees take on a role in many histories. I ended up\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e in Slovenia, a country with a tradition of depicting hives containing biblical stories, mythological figures and even news from the surrounding area. In North America, bees are deeply enmeshed in the story of modernity. In plantations reaching to the horizon, masked beekeepers are reminiscent of space travelers trying to maintain artificial ecologies on a barren planet. The title refers to a notion of ‘worlds’, of which the earth comprises many. The documentary considers our globalised economy, but also the landscapes around the beehive. The micro-level is thus always connected to the macro-level, the local to the global. In Globes, bonds are forged between culture and nature and the ways in which the concept of 'ecology' can be given meaning are explored. Within and beyond our own galaxy, they are forever dying and giving birth to themselves. When very massive stars die, they sometimes dramatically explode, becoming supernovae. Riding the shock wave of these massive explosions, chemical elements and electromagnetic\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003e radiation are scattered across the Universe. It is by this process that other stars, planets, suns, moons, and entire galaxies are formed—not to mention the atoms in our bodies. The Earth is wrapped in an astral blanket of electromagnetic radiation, made from the entrails of exploded stars from distant galaxies. It is from this electromagnetic envelope that cosmic rays meet with hail-strewn clouds to form earth’s lightning. While at every moment, these same cosmic rays silently rain down upon every inch of the earth. They are falling upon you now, as you read this. We know this is true, because one man, Charles Thomson Rees Wilson, fell in love with clouds and made this cosmic rain visible.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eWilson’s love of clouds intensified as he began studying “glories.” A so-called “glory” is the rainbowed halo occasionally seen surrounding objects, often at sunrise, when the air is damp. It’s a bit of an optical trick on the eyes—light from the sun refracting through the vapors of the moistened atmosphere—and it’s undeniably beautiful. In order to better understand glory phenomena, Wilson sought to create and study clouds in his laboratory. And in 1911, he invented the first “cloud chamber” to do just that. Infusing an enclosed chamber with water vapor, he then expanded and cooled the air inside. Like a comet in a wine glass, ionized particles, including cosmic rays, flashed into view and disappeared after a few seconds, becoming visible as condensed water vapor latched onto the ever-falling cosmic rain. These experiments with home-made clouds accidentally advanced the foundation of modern particle physics, which helped win Wilson a Nobel Prize in 1927.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eI couldn’t help but think about Wilson’s work when I first listened to Jordan Dykstra’s Found Clouds, the inaugural release of the Seeing a Forest in a Tree series by Editions Verde. The music was initially inspired by the microtonal tuning system that composer Ben Johnston used for his Suite for Microtonal Piano (1977), as Dykstra found himself near a so-tuned piano while studying at Cal Arts in 2016. Inspired, he devised a series of “cloud scale patterns” to compose for the instrument.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eDykstra’s cloud scales do not feature repeating pitches across the octaves, as in traditional scales. Instead they are based on repeating interval modes applied to the chromatic spectrum. This gives rise to scales whose fundamental pitch and other scale tones vary from one octave to the next, forming “non-one-octave-repeating” patterns. When composing, Dykstra layers a sustained fundamental pitch with other non-sustained cloud scale tones into abstract atmospheres. Within and beyond our own galaxy, they are forever dying and giving birth to themselves. When very massive stars die, they sometimes dramatically explode, becoming supernovae. Riding the shock wave of these massive explosions, chemical elements and electromagnetic\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003e radiation are scattered across the Universe. It is by this process that other stars, planets, suns, moons, and entire galaxies are formed—not to mention the atoms in our bodies. The Earth is wrapped in an astral blanket of electromagnetic radiation, made from the entrails of exploded stars from distant galaxies. It is from this electromagnetic envelope that cosmic rays meet with hail-strewn clouds to form earth’s lightning. While at every moment, these same cosmic rays silently rain down upon every inch of the earth. They are falling upon you now, as you read this. We know this is true, because one man, Charles Thomson Rees Wilson, fell in love with clouds and made this cosmic rain visible.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eWilson’s love of clouds intensified as he began studying “glories.” A so-called “glory” is the rainbowed halo occasionally seen surrounding objects, often at sunrise, when the air is damp. It’s a bit of an optical trick on the eyes—light from the sun refracting through the vapors of the moistened atmosphere—and it’s undeniably beautiful. In order to better understand glory phenomena, Wilson sought to create and study clouds in his laboratory. And in 1911, he invented the first “cloud chamber” to do just that. Infusing an enclosed chamber with water vapor, he then expanded and cooled the air inside. Like a comet in a wine glass, ionized particles, including cosmic rays, flashed into view and disappeared after a few seconds, becoming visible as condensed water vapor latched onto the ever-falling cosmic rain. These experiments with home-made clouds accidentally advanced the foundation of modern particle physics, which helped win Wilson a Nobel Prize in 1927.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eI couldn’t help but think about Wilson’s work when I first listened to Jordan Dykstra’s Found Clouds, the inaugural release of the Seeing a Forest in a Tree series by Editions Verde. The music was initially inspired by the microtonal tuning system that composer Ben Johnston used for his Suite for Microtonal Piano (1977), as Dykstra found himself near a so-tuned piano while studying at Cal Arts in 2016. Inspired, he devised a series of “cloud scale patterns” to compose for the instrument.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eDykstra’s cloud scales do not feature repeating pitches across the octaves, as in traditional scales. Instead they are based on repeating interval modes applied to the chromatic spectrum. This gives rise to scales whose fundamental pitch and other scale tones vary from one octave to the next, forming “non-one-octave-repeating” patterns. When composing, Dykstra layers a sustained fundamental pitch with other non-sustained cloud scale tones into abstract atmospheres.
