They convey a sense of isolation that, by singing about it, opens up. The video work is accessible via a password-protected link, also included in the book.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003e***\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003e\"\u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003e \u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eIn 2012 Roel Meelkop was asked to participate in an exhibition in the small town of Hoek van Holland, which is part of the greater Rotterdam area.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eHoek van Holland, or as most people call it, ‘de Hoek’ (literally Corner of Holland, or ‘the Corner’) was originally built in the late 19th century as a defence for the Port of Rotterdam. In World War II it became part of the defence line of the Nazi’s called the Atlantikwall. They built vast underground bunkers in the dunes, many of which are still intact. Some of these are open for public, but most are closed or only accessible to a selected few. The other side of the river shows the industry of the Port of Rotterdam, mainly lots of cranes (un)loading containers from the huge ships that bring them here. But de Hoek is also a seaside resort with wide beaches and matching beach clubs, assuring a wide range of entertainment. And, last but not least, de Hoek has a beautiful dune landscape, giving home to flora and fauna that cannot be found elsewhere.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThis mix of activities is something very unique to the town and reason for Roel to ask video artist Marco Douma to collaborate on the project. This resulted in a sound\/video performance in one of the beach clubs in 2012. In this live installation called\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e‘Atlantic Wall’ they focused on Hoek’s surroundings. In 2014 they were asked to participate in a new exhibition in de Hoek. In World War II it became part of the defence line of the Nazi’s called the Atlantikwall. They built vast underground bunkers in the dunes, many of which are still intact. Some of these are open for public, but most are closed or only accessible to a selected few. The other side of the river shows the industry of the Port of Rotterdam, mainly lots of cranes (un)loading containers from the huge ships that bring them here. But de Hoek is also a seaside resort with wide beaches and matching beach clubs, assuring a wide range of entertainment. And, last but not least, de Hoek has a beautiful dune landscape, giving home to flora and fauna that cannot be found elsewhere.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThis mix of activities is something very unique to the town and reason for Roel to ask video artist Marco Douma to collaborate on the project. Here: breath and breathing, too, both, elements that are severely implicated in terms of gestural musical impact, but – of course – also took centre stage in the deadly respiratory pandemic and airborne catastrophe we find ourselves in. Aube worked with only fire on one record (one amongst many experiments with sole source material). Hazard produced a record focusing on wind. Sol Invictus is not made with sounds of breath only. Nor with only wind instruments. But somewhere in the suspended winterly animation of this record, breath and breathing takes a chokehold on all proceedings. Therewith notions of ambient are kept at bay, precisely because attention is constantly jolted into heightened states of awareness, without the use of scare tactics – no: these long lines ebb and flow in sparse fields overgrown with the aesthetics of Another Timbre or Touch and mellowed, hallowed echoes of or reverberations in the innermost workings of elemental industrial. And Yuko Oshima, a name previously not circulating in Machinefabriek’s orbit, is contacted because of a tip-off from a friend. Kids have climbed the fence and had a party around it. But at the centre is the building itself. At its core ‘Two Crumbling Shapes’ is about disintegration. The disintegration of ideas, speech, culture, and music. Throughout its 36-minutes ‘Two Crumbling Shapes’ sounds like its gradually eroding from within. There is pleasure in this. As the album progresses the songs become more and more fractured. At times Remondino’s beats sound like rumble falling from on high. Giordano’s vocals are used more like an instrument than to tell a story. Her vocal range goes from tender whispers to guttural bellows. Underneath all, there are wonky synths and hulking basslines. All of this combined gives the music a unique take on musique concrete. Yes, I know that this isn’t musique concrete, but the backing tracks have that slightly unsettling feeling that you can’t quite explain, or comprehend, but is utterly compelling to listen to.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThroughout ŌTONN ask us to reconsider how we feel about disintegration. It makes us question our need for having the newest phone or tablet and what this means to the world we live in. Its poses questions about an isolated society where everything is conveyed through a phone, or screen, instead of face to face and what happens when those devices cease working. The granular synthesis opens up the full level of intensity on myriads of layers of sound processing when the amp gets a thorough workout and the speakers are fed with all the right power to project the microscopic detail(s) across the room.
