This record was released in September 2024 by Native American flute player Timothy Archambault through the experimental/drone label Ideologic Organ in Paris, France. It contains 9 pieces for unaccompanied flute inspired by the indigenous Algonquin (Onimikig) brontomancy (divination by lightning). Below is a description from the label. "Timothy Archambault's compositions for solo flute are inspired by Indigenous brontomancy. Each piece highlights a different extended flute technique, metaphorically related to the types of thunder sounds: clap, peel, roll, rumble, inversion, and CG (Cloud to Ground). The Indigenous flutes used in this recording are made of cedar wood, traditionally used by the Kicheshipirini and other tribes living along the Ottawa and St. Lawrence rivers. To the Algonquin, the flute (pibigwan) is the windmaker, the essence of wind. Unlike other tribes' use of the flute as a courtship instrument, the Algonquin used the flute for more meditative purposes, to imitate the sounds of nature, or as a signal in times of conflict. When love songs were required, they were generally of a more mournful nature, expressing sorrow, loneliness, or separation from a lover. The intro to the album begins with the rocking of a necklace made of an otter penis bone, a fish spine, a bear claw, a moose tooth, and a deerskin, a gift from Algonquin elder Ajawajesi. It is meant to focus the listener's attention before the flute piece begins. The warbles and multiphonic oscillations common to all the pieces traditionally represent the "throaty" vocalization of the tonic note, sometimes known as the horizon from which the melody emerges. The repetition of the multiphonic oscillations causes the performer to breathe irregularly, creating an altered state similar to traditional ritual. " Label and other works here /// Click here to...
