"Rubbish Music uses sound to investigate the journeys, transformations and impacts of our discarded objects. the worlds we make and destroy via our rubbish.

From the great rubbish patches we have made in our oceans to buried dumps and sophisticated recycling plants the objects we let go of continue in many guises without us. Decay, transformation, re-purposing and recycling are just some of the means by which our everyday objects might persist and change in ways which extend beyond our relationships with them.

These journeys discarded items embark upon also create new worlds, new niches for species. With our toolkit of rusty bells, dirty oven grills, onion skins, toilet plungers, wine bottles, nasal spray and a squeaky chicken toy, we seek to imagine some of them.

RUBBISH MUSIC is the duo of Kate Carr and Iain Chambers.
Upcycling is their first album."

From here our journey turns strange, with Metaxas overlaying this beginning using the sounds he could make from objects he found in his studio: small rocks, pencils, paint brushes and little metallic toys. From these modest starting points, he, over the course of 25 minutes, delivers an exercise in restrained ambiguity, a gentle probing of possibilities and questions with no firm resolutions on the horizon at all.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003e'The title is an error in print (errata) found in Zygmunt Bauman’s book Modernity and its Ambivalence,' explains Metaxas. I asked them to read my words as instructions for the making of sounds, so that their\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e making of sounds could challenge those words and the possibility of instruction: crossing them out and going beyond a literal demand. In response, the artists pulled on letters and stretched their sense of time and space, until they mean as sound; and the works produced do not generate interpretations but materialisations: odd things done and conjured in the performance of words rather than their reference. This is a race cut record released in January 2022 by Salomé Voegelin, a British acoustic poet and university professor, on the label Flaming Pines, which is run by the experimental musician Kate Carr in London, England. Eight people including Rie Nakajima, KMRU, and Claire Rousay participated. DL code included.The following is a commentary by the writer himself. "I write scores by myself to talk to humans and more than humans. I use words, go beyond words, do things with things, and listen. That causes exchanges, including ringing. My starting point is private, intimate, quiet, if not silent, and more felt than audible. By speaking from there, the senses act. By expanding to, listening, and ringing, we take an accidental form and meet others, others, hear, and ring. Thus, I am shared based on mysterious and personal imagination. I started to create a space of turmoil and things to tell my instructions. In this album, I used a format called text score to invite eight artists to such a conversation. Give them my words. They were read as sound-making instructions, and the words were erased to exceed literal demands so that their sound-making could challenge the words and possibilities of the instructions, whereas the artists said. They pulled the letters, extended their sense of time and space, until the letters had meaning as sound, and the work produced produced materialization, not interpretation. Thus, they were obedient to the instructions.
