Released on May 20th 2014, Bry, with his newly assembled band The Providers, spent the following few years traversing North America playing clubs, festivals and storied stages such as Toronto’s Massey Hall. Nothing new for an artist who had spent the aughts in a constant state of motion with Constantines, a band who on average had performed one of every three nights on a stage somewhere in the world. In fact, running in parallel to Bry’s solo touring schedule was a reunion with his former Constantines’ bandmates to once again present their incendiary live show and celebrate the 11th anniversary reissue of the band’s \"Shine A Light\". It is what happened as the decade wound down that seemed out of character for an artist who had spent close to 20 years immersed in the studio and on the stage: the music stopped altogether. Bry explains his feelings at that time, “I lost the musical plot about 5 years ago and stopped playing music entirely, sold instruments and recording equipment, and committed myself to the idea that I was absolutely done”. Webb dedicated himself to his ongoing work in community radio, months turned to years and musical life seemed to be all but gone\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e from view.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eNow in an unexpected turnaround 10 years on from the recording of his last studio album, there is not only a return to the stage for Bry but also a new record. Released on May 20th 2014, Bry, with his newly assembled band The Providers, spent the following few years traversing North America playing clubs, festivals and storied stages such as Toronto’s Massey Hall. Nothing new for an artist who had spent the aughts in a constant state of motion with Constantines, a band who on average had performed one of every three nights on a stage somewhere in the world. In fact, running in parallel to Bry’s solo touring schedule was a reunion with his former Constantines’ bandmates to once again present their incendiary live show and celebrate the 11th anniversary reissue of the band’s \"Shine A Light\". It is what happened as the decade wound down that seemed out of character for an artist who had spent close to 20 years immersed in the studio and on the stage: the music stopped altogether. Bry explains his feelings at that time, “I lost the musical plot about 5 years ago and stopped playing music entirely, sold instruments and recording equipment, and committed myself to the idea that I was absolutely done”. On their album Philadelphia, Nicholas Krgovich, Joseph Shabason, and Chris Harris chase a similar kind of romance toward the mundane and miniscule details made more visible by the world’s newfound relationship with the Great Indoors. The three musicians, who convened on a shared love of New Age music, create a space of sonic refuge out of softly electrified textures, burbling live instrumentation, and Shabason’s lacquered synth work, all of which support Krgovich’s koan-like poetry about showers before bed, dusty minivans, sips of gatorade, and the modern minutiae rendered beautiful by mere observation.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eContrasting the forced trend of remote collaborations, Philadelphia was recorded across three days of sessions in Toronto, pre-COVID. “Somewhere back in 2018 we started to pass demos back and forth over email and we quickly got about eight song sketches together,” explains Shabason. “Then in fall of 2019 we all realised that if we didn’t get into the same room together we were never gonna finish this album.” The trio’s physical proximity while recording\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e underwrites the hushed tones that pervade the album, which itself reads like the kind of quiet, personal conversation that can only happen in close quarters lest it be washed away in the din of public life. Philadelphia establishes this immediately with “Osouji”, a track whose gentle intro of balmy synth and crickets suggests a sunrise and sunset equally. Bathed in calm light, Krgovich sets a scene not unfamiliar in this day and age: “Garden pebbles underfoot \/ the wet bamboo \/ been inside all the day \/ deep cleaning room to room.” Krgovich wrote the album’s lyrics under the self-imposed philosophy of “first thought, best thought” admittedly avoiding the well-trodden subjects of romance, love, and heartbreak. He chooses instead to reveal the romanticism of the world hidden in plain sight while Harris and Shabason deepen the sentiment with reflective, instrumental excursions. Whispered, conversational synthesizers fill out “Tuesday Afternoon” over a backdrop of birdsong, and vocals make only brief appearances near the track’s beginning and end. Conversely, “Friday Afternoon” is lyrically driven, and delivers an anthemic refrain that constitutes one of the most emotional moments of Philadelphia. After a postcard-like recounting of seeing a roadside stranger experience car trouble, Krgovich repeats the hushed mantra “wrap your loving arms around it”, almost as a call-to-action for embracing the present moment as it is instead of as it ought to be. “I Don’t See the Moon” is a lighter mood by comparison. But where the duo’s previous effort Philadelphia would’ve camped permanently in the stillness, At Scaramouche lunges into the upbeat stroller “In the Middle of the Day”. Though no less exemplary of the album’s quiet everyday magic, it sets a brisker pace with its head-nodding drum break and coolly interjecting bassline. Other moments on the album reiterate the spryness, like the nearly-erratic “Soli II”, and the lively pop centerpiece “I Am So Happy With My Little Dog”. On the latter, Krgovich leads a tight-knit ensemble that comes as close to krautrock here as they ever might, where a driving drumbeat politely urges the elements forward; trumpet harmonies, chanting vocals, and bubbling synths, all crowned by a chorus-laden, perfectly askew solo from guitarist Thom Gill . “This record was very much a band effort. This core was then augmented by a cadre of collaborators both old and new drawn from Toronto’s deep musical well. With third track, the Crimson-esque instrumental \"Gorge\", introducing wah-wah guitar, mellotron, flute, sax and strings to the proceedings all bets are off on what will come next. What does follow is one of the album’s highlights, \"Song of Spring\" (which features a star turn on vocals and composition courtesy of luminous Toronto legend Drew Smith of Bicycles and Bunny fame). As the confessional cut unwinds with a Joseph Shabason sax solo casting a distinct counterpoint to the narrator’s sense of loss and regret, the tune makes a strong case for the band to further explore their soul leanings. Side A concludes with \"Rose Quartz\", which is perhaps the album’s freest expression of ensemble playing. A deep groove provides a launch pad for sax soloing and psychedelic verse that takes a page from electric jazz and also, but not surprisingly, another of Toronto’s purveyors of psych, Possum, whose overlapping membership with Bart cannot be ignored.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\"Some Kind Of Way’s\" Side B contains the record’s deep cuts and an even more eclectic sound emerges. \"Home Before 5\" is classic Bart with its series of musical movements, progressive leanings, sophisticated tone and opaque lyricism. Second cut \"Forced Perspective\" is another accusatory post-punk shouter with the band at its most sly and mathy. Next up is \"The Breeze\" (credited to the entire band) which is a particularly dank visit to the swamp of psychedelic jammers that inhabit B-sides and B-movies; clearly the band was getting loose in the studio and this is perhaps the most spontaneous track in the entire Bart catalogue. Closing track \"All Good Things\" (written by Vanderwielen and Mark Smith) is a wonderfully melancholic acoustic and string ode and, although a true outlier, it sends the album off in elegant fashion.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eWith Bart being a group of such avid musical seekers, \"Some Kind Of Way\" feels as though a deep musicologist has made a mixtape of songs from albums you need to own. Seeking to abandon the protracted and meticulous creative process of previous albums, chief architects Christopher Shannon and Nathan Vanderwielen assembled a core group of players to form a new iteration of Bart by inviting multi-instrumentalists Harrison Forman (Hieronymus Harry, Dr. Joy), Patrick Lefler (ROY, Possum) and drummer Michael Brushey to help capture the record’s spontaneous ensemble performances. This core was then augmented by a cadre of collaborators both old and new drawn from Toronto’s deep musical well. Familiar voices return including Joseph Shabason (Tenor Sax), Jason Bhattacharya (percussion) along with newcomers to the Bart universe Carl Didur (piano\/synth), Patrick Smith (soprano sax, flute), Ewen Farncombe (Trumpet), Eliza Niemi (cello) and Rachel Cardiello (viola). With third track, the Crimson-esque instrumental \"Gorge\", introducing wah-wah guitar, mellotron, flute, sax and strings to the proceedings all bets are off on what will come next. What does follow is one of the album’s highlights, \"Song of Spring\" (which features a star turn on vocals and composition courtesy of luminous Toronto legend Drew Smith of Bicycles and Bunny fame). As the confessional cut unwinds with a Joseph Shabason sax solo casting a distinct counterpoint to the narrator’s sense of loss and regret, the tune makes a strong case for the band to further explore their soul leanings. Side A concludes with \"Rose Quartz\", which is perhaps the album’s freest expression of ensemble playing. A deep groove provides a launch pad for sax soloing and psychedelic verse that takes a page from electric jazz and also, but not surprisingly, another of Toronto’s purveyors of psych, Possum, whose overlapping membership with Bart cannot be ignored.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\"Some Kind Of Way’s\" Side B contains the record’s deep cuts and an even more eclectic sound emerges. \"Home Before 5\" is classic Bart with its series of musical movements, progressive leanings, sophisticated tone and opaque lyricism. Second cut \"Forced Perspective\" is another accusatory post-punk shouter with the band at its most sly and mathy. Next up is \"The Breeze\" (credited to the entire band) which is a particularly dank visit to the swamp of psychedelic jammers that inhabit B-sides and B-movies; clearly the band was getting loose in the studio and this is perhaps the most spontaneous track in the entire Bart catalogue.
