These pieces grew out of a desire to find new liberties and expand the range of the Golden Brown lexicon, rather than fall back into the familiar domain of past endeavors. Part of the road to realizing “Luminous” was deciding to only use guitars to generate the tracks, foregoing the mandocello, keyboards, and his wife’s cello playing that graced last year’s “Gems and Minerals”. Out of that limitation emerged a focus on re-imagining Beck’s guitar practice, abandoning his usual tunings and picking patterns, with most of the songs coming out of a daily improvisation practice. He even experimented with a prepared guitar approach on Mammoth Star, ala early twentieth century extended piano techniques from the likes of Cowell and Cage. He also wanted to highlight the unique resonance and idiosyncrasy of a Harmony cast aluminum lap steel\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\" class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e from 1936, which provides the leading voice in Ghosts, to haunting effect.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eAnother important piece of creating “Luminous” was establishing a connection, through music, to the local Colorado landscape and trails where Beck has found much inspiration and respite. Beck made most, if not all, of the field recordings along a particular favorite trail in Boulder County and later composed several of the pieces in dialogue to the rhythms and textures captured in those recordings. I hadn’t regularly played guitar in about two or three years. I started reading ‘Dazzling Stranger’ about Bert Jansch and the new wave of British folk musicians in the ‘60s and beyond and was incredibly inspired by the immediacy of that music. I think there is something magical, and perhaps even alchemical, about an expression being distilled to its most essential elements. I also wanted to make my new recordings as immediate and essentialized as possible. I think working with tape fosters that approach, because it’s quite difficult to overthink things or to do too much editing or mucking about after a take is laid down. Hence, there is an ‘as it is’ feel to every piece — warts and all.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eThese sounds are me trying to find my own personal devotional music. When writing and generating ideas for these pieces, I asked that my highest version of myself come through as much as possible. That’s perhaps the part of me that is connected to beauty, to the love that I have for myself and others, to the unknowable vastness, and to the interdependent nature of all things. I wanted to find expression for those kinds of abstract feelings and experiences. To me, those are the most potent parts of my lived experience and I want\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\" class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e to honor them. I immediately got up and hammered it out. I didn’t initially see the connection between that image and the music, but the more I sat with the two I felt a potential through-line.
