Below is a commentary by the artist himself. "The production of these two songs is polar opposites, both long-form pieces with a sense of forward momentum supported by propulsive percussion. "Harbor Ripple Blue" was written and recorded during a week-long stay at EMS Studios in Stockholm in March 6. I traveled to Stockholm with a small bag of percussive objects, a small drum machine and some transducers. When I arrived at my apartment, a short walk from the studio, I met my host, who showed me a beautiful Nordic dulcimer (I forget the name) that he had stored under his bed. After a few days in the studio, the piece was starting to take shape, so I decided to bring out the dulcimer and give it its final shape. At EMS, they had a row of beautiful vintage modular synths, so I played a bit of synthesizer, but mostly I used the small equipment I brought with me. I walked slowly through late winter in Stockholm, with snow falling, sun shining, ice melting on the harbor, and Lucy Railton playing Olivier Messiaen in church. When I got back, the piece was mostly finished with me, but I asked two friends to contribute parts: Julian Morris (who writes as Layperson) on vocals and Ben Varian (who writes as Ben Varian) on drums. I like to take songwriters to different environments and hear how they tighten everything up, but also how they loosen their approach and keep it open and spacious. "Dark Air Quiet" has a much different trajectory. I've reworked this song countless times. Rye Warner (who used to write as Ohioan and now writes as Natural...
