"One of the most notorious personifications of hatred in the history of cinema is Captain Ahab in John Huston's 1956 classic Moby Dick. Berlin-based musician and sound artist Jan Jelinek has transformed Ahab's voice into an instrument. At Faitiche, in 2022, an audio co-developed with Canadian new media artist Clive Holden. Introducing Jan Jelinek's soundtrack for visual software "SEASCAPE - polyptych".
"SEASCAPE - polyptych" is based on the image and sound sources of "Moby Dick".While Holden grapples with manipulating film sequences,Ahab's voice plays a central role in Jan Jelinek's soundtrack. The dynamic volume and tone of the Captain's speech control a synthesizer system that transforms Ahab's voice into ten abstract soundscapes. In this work, the voice gives impulse and controls things, but what we hear is not the sound of the spoken word itself.Occasionally, only fragments of speech are heard in which syllables and sounds are recognizable.Instead, we hear compositions made up of hiss, soundscapes and bursts of sound. The atmosphere is dark and ominous. However, each song has a clear sonic structure and follows an easy-to-understand dramatic structure. This music is abstract but never overwhelming. On the contrary, SEASCAPE - polyptych invites the listener to let the sound flow.

Although part of a piece of media art, the soundtrack can be enjoyed without such a connecting superstructure. You can enjoy it without any prior knowledge. But what if we knew that it was the sound waves of the human voice that controlled the network of synthesizers? If you want to hear Ahab, you should be able to hear Ahab's chorus from every sound fragment.Subliminal threats and magical Ahab. And Ahab whips his subordinates and heads for ruin together. The majestic 'Now, on the quay, waiting and watching', the oppressive 'pulled towards the center of the vortex', these are all music, sonic discourses.
