And it is indeed ‘movement’, along with its close cousin ‘time’, that seems to inform the pure experimentalism with sound generated on Another Use For Time. Fousek’s tones flurry back and forth across and inside each other, with the Canadian composer oscillating between the macro and micro gestures of his instrument to create a sonic sculpture in constant motion. Fousek himself describes it as an album made in transition: “It's kind of a reflection of my past work and taste and techniques, while also trying to move forward.”\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eUnusually for Fousek, these three pieces were recorded at separate times, straddling a period of transition as the artist left Montreal to move back west to Vancouver.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eThe album’s opening 18-minute exploration, ‘What Was Once Or Twice’, was recorded in Seattle, and is split into two movements. Slowly coming together over an extended period, Landscape Formations features six artist\/composers from Copenhagen, each contributing lengthy sound works resembling sonambient sculptures or creeping gas leaks, seeping out of speakers and into the atmosphere.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eServing as a reintroduction to Phinery after a two-year hiatus, Landscape Formations is a compilation of tangible beauty, unhurried in its formulation, and sparse with its ideas. Martin Kozak’s ‘hverfa’ is an apt opening track, assembling ten-minutes of soft piano keys and delicate ambient tones shimmering as a still lake beneath a full moon. Both Ragnhild May and Sandra Boss use a variety of tools in their practice, the former here contributing a wispy set of slowly unfurling drones from software-controlled flutes that resemble the buzzing of sand dunes, while the latter de- and reconstructs tones derived from erased cassettes, utilizing worn out tape machines to re-filter and re-record vacant sonic spaces into glitch-scapes of\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003e overtones and long-distant sonic remnants.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eThe mysterious Yuri and Grøn each summon diffuse sound environments that sedately evolve virtual sounds in otherworldly patterns inside brightly lit imaginary rooms. The half-hour finale, ‘The Shadows Overlapped And Parted’ by O.V. is a ritualistic and patient emanation of bottomless vaporous tones and languid, leering bass. The music fully embraces the loneliness of lockdown to go on an inward journey, brimming with liquified free-time rhythms and interlacing samples. It’s music to get lost in, speaking its own syntax, constantly shifting and bobbing freely through digital space. That Dublab set became the 15-minute opener, ‘Alone Jazz on Safari’, while similarly sprawling hyper collage, ‘Archigram Living’, was recorded live via Twitch for Chicago-based show, Open.Space. The two shorter interludes – ”little palette cleansers between the other two sprawling pieces” as brin puts it – were recorded shortly afterwards.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003e“To me these tracks mirror my mental state, my perception of time, and how fluid things were feeling in the amorphous blob of time when I was laid off and could only put my energy into heavy experimentation through music,” says brin. His impulsive, unbound, and percussive approach to sampling sees a freeform squall of countless unknowable samples colliding for minutes at a time. Using his magpie-like assemblage of samples, brin refracts a maddening reality into four suitably entropic pieces, stumbling along\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003e the way into far more beauty and colour than expected.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eHighspeed Light Body hints at a vast array of environmental factors and aesthetic influences, assembling copiously fleeting images, closer to free-jazz in its flow and structure than to the considered realm of laptop music. This is cubist psychedelic introversion, buoyed by the spontaneity of the unforeseeable conditions this music was made under; a snapshot from inside a mind during a time of global transition. The music fully embraces the loneliness of lockdown to go on an inward journey, brimming with liquified free-time rhythms and interlacing samples. It’s music to get lost in, speaking its own syntax, constantly shifting and bobbing freely through digital space. That Dublab set became the 15-minute opener, ‘Alone Jazz on Safari’, while similarly sprawling hyper collage, ‘Archigram Living’, was recorded live via Twitch for Chicago-based show, Open.Space. The two shorter interludes – ”little palette cleansers between the other two sprawling pieces” as brin puts it – were recorded shortly afterwards.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003e“To me these tracks mirror my mental state, my perception of time, and how fluid things were feeling in the amorphous blob of time when I was laid off and could only put my energy into heavy experimentation through music,” says brin. His impulsive, unbound, and percussive approach to sampling sees a freeform squall of countless unknowable samples colliding for minutes at a time. For, when your destination is the cosmic aether, to linger softly at the threshold of motion only serves to prolong subjugation to the weight of the world.
