It was then when microphones became a natural common part of the equipment of many households. Audio recordings were no longer unusual: everyone could make them. Handheld walkmans with a dictaphone option, analogue answering machines, tape players always equipped with a red button and a tiny hole to which one should speak in order to have their voice archived – all of these were to be found pretty much everywhere and pretty much everyone knew how to use them. There was no philosophy behind it: tapes cost pennies. And many of them have survived to this day. (...)\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eDisappointment is a recurrent theme in these tapes. The jammed Radio Free Europe broadcasts, the vulgar sexist cabarets which stopped being funny many, many years ago (if they were ever funny at all) and above all the conversations describing new taxes, the difficulties of everyday life, or even complaints about the phoning system and the need to wait hours by the phone before being able to speak to relatives abroad.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIt is not uncommon to find tapes with Father Popieluszko’s sermons about truth, disguised (perhaps to fool the militia?) as Modern Talking cassettes, with the tracklist handwritten on the red and white inlay card. On tapes, people were sharing things they had never seen, the voices of people they had never met and recordings of music they could never experience live in a concert. But he was also a romantic guy: the tape on the bottom of the box was titled (in handwriting in pencil) «Wanda’s Dream, May 1982». It’s a quiet, 8-minute long recording of someone’s snoring. Did Jan ever listen back to his wife sleeping? Did he go to sleep in a grey communist Warsaw flat with this tape on after both TV channels had finished their broadcasts? Did he ever try to imagine the sounds, the smells and the looks of Wanda’s bedroom in colorful capitalist Vienna? Again, disappointment is a recurring theme. The LP is the result of the first live collaboration between the poet\/artist Miller and the cellist\/improvisor Kanngießer, recorded at London’s Cafe Oto in January of 2023. Kanngießer’s searching, intensive cello lays an amorphous terrain beneath passing fragments of Miller’s poetry (from her 2022 book of the same name from JOAN Publishing), billboards dotting the interior freeway of liminal perception. The micro-world of spectral and textural details within the cello sound seems to dramatize or mirror the micro-world of unspoken implications left unsaid in the gaps between threads of language. At times, these worlds produce a dull anxiety or a quiet fervor, only to be scattered by the occasional swerve to a poetic delivery reminiscent of slow-motion jokes (“I once saw a sign on the side of a road it said SLOW DUST”), a fortuitous error (“a seagull shitting on my face is home”), a mysterious interruption of domestic boredom (“someone’s girlfriend called to say don’t answer”). Occasional dates progressing through time give the sense that we are being driven through a year of blue Mondays, the cello wandering as if seasonally. The LP is the result of the first live collaboration between the poet\/artist Miller and the cellist\/improvisor Kanngießer, recorded at London’s Cafe Oto in January of 2023. Kanngießer’s searching, intensive cello lays an amorphous terrain beneath passing fragments of Miller’s poetry (from her 2022 book of the same name from JOAN Publishing), billboards dotting the interior freeway of liminal perception. The micro-world of spectral and textural details within the cello sound seems to dramatize or mirror the micro-world of unspoken implications left unsaid in the gaps between threads of language. At times, these worlds produce a dull anxiety or a quiet fervor, only to be scattered by the occasional swerve to a poetic delivery reminiscent of slow-motion jokes (“I once saw a sign on the side of a road it said SLOW DUST”), a fortuitous error (“a seagull shitting on my face is home”), a mysterious interruption of domestic boredom (“someone’s girlfriend called to say don’t answer”). Occasional dates progressing through time give the sense that we are being driven through a year of blue Mondays, the cello wandering as if seasonally. I eagerly listen to a lot of music with those qualities, but I’m rarely actually confused by it. I find Seashells, on the other hand, to be genuinely pretty confusing. The form and instrumentation are clear enough – poppy songs with keyboards and vocals. But the electric piano is often dashing through so many thick chords that they barely sound melodic, and it’s difficult to tell whether the singer is blurting out insular jokes or divulging slices of hard-won poetic wisdom.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eAnd that’s what’s head-scratching about Seashells: the tone is really hard to read. It’s both embarrassingly earnest and defensively coy. The social commentary is both spot-on and murky, perhaps a bit dodgy at moments. The production sounds both fussily overcooked and rushed, unfinished. That’s all to say: it’s terrific. I love this record. I find its contradictions rejuvenating. I eagerly listen to a lot of music with those qualities, but I’m rarely actually confused by it. I find Seashells, on the other hand, to be genuinely pretty confusing. The form and instrumentation are clear enough – poppy songs with keyboards and vocals. But the electric piano is often dashing through so many thick chords that they barely sound melodic, and it’s difficult to tell whether the singer is blurting out insular jokes or divulging slices of hard-won poetic wisdom.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eAnd that’s what’s head-scratching about Seashells: the tone is really hard to read. It’s both embarrassingly earnest and defensively coy. The social commentary is both spot-on and murky, perhaps a bit dodgy at moments. The production sounds both fussily overcooked and rushed, unfinished. That’s all to say: it’s terrific. I love this record. I find its contradictions rejuvenating. And, at a basic level, I’m simply delighted by what I hear as its perverse and slightly juvenile joyfulness, which is the least confusing part of it; joy\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e\u003cem\u003e is always perverse and slightly (or more than slightly) juvenile.\u003c\/em\u003e\"\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003eDescription by Reading Group:\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e\u003cem\u003e\"Their first release in over six years, \"Seashells\" is the 10th full-length record by Blanche Blanche Blanche (Zach Phillips and Sarah Smith). The Hands of Grace presents for the first time the original music that Reed composed for his 2021 play, “The Slave Who Loved Caviar,” which was read at the Nuyorican Poets Café and premiered at the Theater for the New City in 2021. Also featured on the album are several other solo piano and ensemble compositions by Reed, with accompaniment from Roger Glenn (flute), Ray Obiedo (guitar), Carla Blank (violin), and Tennessee Reed (voice).\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eReed’s compositions on The Hands of Grace range from humor and pastiche to arresting beauty.
