These people have had a long relationship with this seemingly empty country – for thousands of years – they understand and care for the country and in turn the land cares for them. So, you decide to invade\/colonise this country. You need to clear this empty land to make it your own, ready for you to inhabit, maybe even make it more like where you‘re from. This not only changes the land but also vastly changes the nature of the long relationship of those you’ve displaced. But this story isn't really about \"them\". It’s about you. As you colonise this new country, moving further into the interior, you soon discover that you are very ill-prepared for what turns out to be a harsh and hostile land. This album plays out across four scenes, traversing the historical dynamics of the settler colonial trope through the eyes not of the invaded but instead the invaders of a hard and unforgiving land. This story is not about well-fought battles in a harsh land nor the romanticisation of ghost towns and spectral remains. Five generations after that first migration\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e across the ocean, Robert Curgenven was the first of his line to leave Australia, to return to the family’s roots on Cornwall’s Atlantic peninsula.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eIn Cornwall, living amongst country as wild as his former home in Australia’s Northern Territory, Curgenven returned also to his first instrument, the pipe organ. As with the Turner painting, “Snow Storm – Steam Boat off a Harbour’s Mouth”, that adorns the back cover and whose story is at the heart of an eponymous track which bodily charts this myth of biography, SIRÈNE sends listeners across roiling oceans billowing humid air, beneath plunging coastlines. Amid this elemental immersion, Curgenven asks what is it to belong to a land, or even to this ever-changing country?\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eCornwall has been home to thousands of years of tin mining and a tin trade dating back beyond the Phoenicians. Legend has it that “Ulysses” epic told the journey west for tin to make bronze: the Isles of Scilly to Cornwall’s south-west, the treacherous home to the Sirens, where – like Turner – Ulysses tied himself to the mast, instead to resist their call.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eEmpires have come and gone, like Cornwall’s rugged granite cliffs, which once stood miles away in the days of Cornubia. As with the coast, the people have remained in a slow process of transformation - waves of imperialism come and go, like on Caliban’s horizon in his own Tempest. This is a split work by Will Montgomery, who teaches in the field of English Literature at the University of London, and Robert Curgenven, an Australian sound artist living in Ireland who has released works for LINE, Tapeworm, Touch, and more. Side A Heygate is constructed from materials collected at the Heygate estate in the Elephant & Castle district of South London. Completed in 1974, the housing complex is a remnant of the city's vigorous housing construction plans in the late 60's and early 70's, and will soon be demolished.The sounds, collected by contact microphones, receivers, and telephone pick-up coils, are intended to present a cipher of the housing complex's acoustic environment. Robert Curgenven titled the B-side 'Looking For Narratives On A Small Island', featuring guitar feedback, binaural mics, industrial fans, and raw field recordings from 2004-2009 in Australia, Germany and Japan. We offer a work with a thick layer compared to the A side used.His sound is more complex, has a more sensory tangibility, and a stillness that sinks deep into the mix.
