After over a decade of releases on labels like Adversary Electronics, Hooker Vision, Lillerne Tapes, and Never Anything, Baugh moves into darker realms with Night Sky Body. Pain\/Air, out in April 2022 on sound as language, is the fourth release for Baugh under this new moniker. Night Sky Body is a reimagining of themes Baugh has been working on for years. Dream imagery, automatic writing, and psychological landscapes are distilled into fragmented song forms and sound collages. Abstract shapes take form and symbols reveal themselves as the process evolves. Embracing elements of industrial and goth this is haunting pop music buried under broken electronics and distorted textures. Layers are peeled off and then reapplied to give these songs a frayed atmosphere. Nerves are exposed and emotions are laid bare but the artist instead feels liberated and hopeful here. Night Sky Body is a fascinating rebirth and rejuvenation for Baugh. Dream imagery, automatic writing, and psychological landscapes are distilled into fragmented song forms and sound collages. Abstract shapes take form and symbols reveal themselves as the process evolves. Embracing elements of industrial and goth this is haunting pop music buried under broken electronics and distorted textures. Layers are peeled off and then reapplied to give these songs a frayed atmosphere. Nerves are exposed and emotions are laid bare but the artist instead feels liberated and hopeful here. Night Sky Body is a fascinating rebirth and rejuvenation for Baugh. You might know Utz from his more notable rock bands, Dope Body (Drag City) and Scroll Downers. But his solo work is something entirely different, encompassing wide swaths of ambient, electronic and experimental neo-jazz, \"direct deposit\" follows up Utz's 2019 album, \"Value Plush,\" on Ehse Records. He has also released solo works on labels like Patient Sounds, Player Press and Become Eternal.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eBorn out of an attempt to redefine his entire workflow, Utz began working on \"direct deposit\" way back in 2018. Primarily a \"loop based\" musician for most of his life, Utz made a conscious effort to change his approach with \"direct deposit.\" While recurring elements still appear on the album, Utz wanted to give the pieces more of a sense of generative unpredictability. This involved specific placement of sonic elements both physically within the pieces themselves and also within the sound field. The idea was to create a listening space where distinct fragments and elements fly in and out, sometimes only once or twice. The aim was imperfection. Static repetition was to be avoided. Yet, melody\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e remained.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\"direct deposit\" features collaborations with Matthew Pierce on winds, Rod Hamilton on vibraphone, and John Jones (AV Moves, Geo Rip, Dope Body) on electronics. The trio were gracious in allowing Utz to manipulate their contributions into the pieces. The addition of their live instruments provides a heady counterpoint to the chopped and processed samples and synths of \"direct deposit.\"\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eAfter years of tinkering, the eight pieces that make up \"direct deposit\" have undergone numerous revisions. So much so that Utz has lost sight of exactly where they began. Much like the human body regenerates, \"direct deposit\" has shed its skin many times. It's the same, yet completely different. \"direct deposit\" is a regeneration and a rebirth for Utz. You might know Utz from his more notable rock bands, Dope Body (Drag City) and Scroll Downers. But his solo work is something entirely different, encompassing wide swaths of ambient, electronic and experimental neo-jazz, \"direct deposit\" follows up Utz's 2019 album, \"Value Plush,\" on Ehse Records. He has also released solo works on labels like Patient Sounds, Player Press and Become Eternal.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eBorn out of an attempt to redefine his entire workflow, Utz began working on \"direct deposit\" way back in 2018. Primarily a \"loop based\" musician for most of his life, Utz made a conscious effort to change his approach with \"direct deposit.\" While recurring elements still appear on the album, Utz wanted to give the pieces more of a sense of generative unpredictability. This involved specific placement of sonic elements both physically within the pieces themselves and also within the sound field. The idea was to create a listening space where distinct fragments and elements fly in and out, sometimes only once or twice. The aim was imperfection. Static repetition was to be avoided. Yet, melody\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e remained.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\"direct deposit\" features collaborations with Matthew Pierce on winds, Rod Hamilton on vibraphone, and John Jones (AV Moves, Geo Rip, Dope Body) on electronics. The trio were gracious in allowing Utz to manipulate their contributions into the pieces. The small area in the middle of the state is officially zoned as an “unincorporated community,” which means that it’s administered under the jurisdiction of Osceola County rather than its own municipality. In other words, the less than 5,000 people who live in Holopaw don’t have a local government to call their own, residing in the liminal space between established community and remote hinterland.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eJohn Ross grew up near Holopaw, and he chose to borrow its namesake for his second record under the moniker Eerie Gaits. Much like how the area itself is independent from traditional governance, Holopaw t he album is similarly untied from genre and unmoored from singular temperament. The nine instrumental compositions ripple between upbeat guitar strums, bristly fingerpicking, and pensive sections of dense, misty synths. Songs like “What’s Eating You” and “The Rainbow Trout And The Wicker Creel” are the sort of full-bodied yet placid indie-rock he writes with his Brooklyn band Wild Pink (who’ve received glowing coverage at Pitchfork, NPR, Stereogum, etc.).The former features a bobbing bassline, glistening\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e, reverb-laden guitar leads, and warm pockets of synths that grace the other instruments like sunlight streaming through a window on a cold winter afternoon.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eHowever, the song that follows, “Out In The Tall Grass,” is three minutes of patiently stretching ambient music that recalls both the classic work of Brian Eno and the naturalistic muralism of a contemporary composer like Emily A. Sprague. Between the field recordings of crickets chirping and children playing, the woodland song titles, and the album’s scenic cover art, it’s obvious that Ross is attempting to create a sense of bucolic place with Holopaw. But unlike the wholly meditative, almost utopian pleasantness that Sprague and other ambient artists shape with their music, Ross’ compositions will sometimes shift dramatically into foreboding gloominess.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eOne of the last and most complex songs on the record, “A Quiet Explosion In Your Secret War,” ends with ten seconds of peaceful rainfall that would make for a comforting finale to the record. Instead, Ross has it bleed into a sub-two-minute cut called “Oia” that floats upward majestically before taking a sonic and emotional dive into drab droneyness. The track serves as an intro to the album’s actual conclusion, “99, 100”, a seemingly innocuous title that takes on a darker meaning as the song’s haunting synths balloon in volume and scope like the soundtrack to a Lynchian suspense scene.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn a stark contrast to i ts hopeful beginning, the album ends with a grim fade into nothingness. The small area in the middle of the state is officially zoned as an “unincorporated community,” which means that it’s administered under the jurisdiction of Osceola County rather than its own municipality. In other words, the less than 5,000 people who live in Holopaw don’t have a local government to call their own, residing in the liminal space between established community and remote hinterland.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eJohn Ross grew up near Holopaw, and he chose to borrow its namesake for his second record under the moniker Eerie Gaits. Much like how the area itself is independent from traditional governance, Holopaw t he album is similarly untied from genre and unmoored from singular temperament. The nine instrumental compositions ripple between upbeat guitar strums, bristly fingerpicking, and pensive sections of dense, misty synths. Songs like “What’s Eating You” and “The Rainbow Trout And The Wicker Creel” are the sort of full-bodied yet placid indie-rock he writes with his Brooklyn band Wild Pink (who’ve received glowing coverage at Pitchfork, NPR, Stereogum, etc.).The former features a bobbing bassline, glistening\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e, reverb-laden guitar leads, and warm pockets of synths that grace the other instruments like sunlight streaming through a window on a cold winter afternoon.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eHowever, the song that follows, “Out In The Tall Grass,” is three minutes of patiently stretching ambient music that recalls both the classic work of Brian Eno and the naturalistic muralism of a contemporary composer like Emily A. Sprague. Between the field recordings of crickets chirping and children playing, the woodland song titles, and the album’s scenic cover art, it’s obvious that Ross is attempting to create a sense of bucolic place with Holopaw. But unlike the wholly meditative, almost utopian pleasantness that Sprague and other ambient artists shape with their music, Ross’ compositions will sometimes shift dramatically into foreboding gloominess.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eOne of the last and most complex songs on the record, “A Quiet Explosion In Your Secret War,” ends with ten seconds of peaceful rainfall that would make for a comforting finale to the record. Instead, Ross has it bleed into a sub-two-minute cut called “Oia” that floats upward majestically before taking a sonic and emotional dive into drab droneyness. The track serves as an intro to the album’s actual conclusion, “99, 100”, a seemingly innocuous title that takes on a darker meaning as the song’s haunting synths balloon in volume and scope like the soundtrack to a Lynchian suspense scene.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn a stark contrast to i ts hopeful beginning, the album ends with a grim fade into nothingness.
