"'Cai-Bem' is a splendid addition to the already extensive discography of David Maranha. It is also the first full-length vinyl LP in Tanuki Records' cataloge. There is a story behind this new album, although you would not guess what It is, unless told. Keen to explore new ways of playing, as he has done during his whole career since he began playing with his band Osso Exotico in the 1980's, Maranha suggested that they should all play other instruments that their regular ones. He himself switched his organ for the drums, Manuel Mota is on bass, Margarida Garcia on the organ and Miguel Abras on a fostex 4 track tape recorder and voice. Crafting their music as acoustic drone compositions, Maranha and his ensemble play primarily with time. compositions are less about inventing new structures every time, than about the paradoxical challenge of building a stasis retaining the forcefulness of a forward motion. In this case the unusual and eerie sounds they coaxed from their newfound i nstruments adds new layers to the psychedelic power of this great record. "

They both currently live in Austin TX. They have made three albums together, starting with a first LP in 2001. It was followed by a fourteen year break before they resumed their collaboration with a pair of cassettes published on Elevator Bath. Sheffield and Rippie are both working with samples and records, creating their own brand of plunderphonics. There’s always been a certain mystique to this kind of theft and plunder, despite the now commonplace idea of stealing other people’s music to produce your own. In this particular case, you’d be hard-pressed to figure out the actual sources of their music and you have to believe their word when they claim to be using commercially available recordings. They focus on very small, almost microscopic fragments of music, and process them by all means available, using effects pedals, sampling effects, or modifying and damaging the records. The result is a textural reworking of the original sounds, layered and expanded into slowly unfolding atmospheric collages. Garcia and Ilia Belorukov are regular collaborators (as Wolkokrots) while Monteiro has released two records with Garcia and one with Belorukov.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eAll three have in common a practice based on physically challenging sounds and textures sourced from minute gestures and fragile materials like paper, strings, small objects or manipulated acoustic instruments like flute and accordeon. Despite their tiny\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e\u003cem\u003e initial volume and modest origins these sounds are treated until they acquire startling dynamic contrasts ranging from quiet and subtle to violently noisy.
