Artist statement by Steve Hadfield:
“The inspiration is basically Alva Noto. Alva Noto fascinates me because he manages to extract so much from notionally 'sterile' sounds. Perhaps his most successful collaboration, though, has been with the great Ryuichi Sakamoto, where Alva Noto sculpts the rich potential of Sakamoto's piano into strange sonic formations.
That setup is the building blocks for the album. Piano is at the center of each track, but distorted, stretched, and chopped up to varying degrees. Then I put a emperor's new clothes level fresh spin on the tried-and-tested 'soundtrack to an imagined film' by trying to create little two-scene vignettes (hence the title). I love ambient albums with a sense of narrative arc to the music (Substrata, Harmonies In Ultraviolet) but don't have the vision required! little couplets of atmosphere felt like a good compromise and helped bring focus to the music.”
