This debut outing unfolds over a series of brief meetings as the pair skip gleefully between an array of dueling pianos, viola, cello, keyboard and organ undergirded with cellular networks of tape collage, invented instruments, spiritual ritual through everyday appliances and the sputtering engines of broken down cars. Aponia translates to“absence of pain” a state of perfect equilibrium in the epicurean ideal of the good-life. In the accompanying wood block print the pair is seen lanced with arrows, and doctors protruding tools- the groups art experiments are tinged with a hopeful affirmation of life in the midsts of serious illness and increasing industrial pollution. A Fireworks Procession through which primordial song-forms emerge referencing the history of blues, home spun drone and free musics simultaneously. The recording herein begins with a voyeuristic transmission of two individuals casually conversing about local eateries, the weather. Small town observations recede toward a fluid whistling and clatter barely emerged. A swell of pots and pans heaved in pathetic rage. Sort of funny to. Known primarily as a visual and performance artist with a keen eye for the miraculous potentials of everyday objects and found materials. Deal combs through waste streams of aural (and spiritual) detritus like scanning through stations on a radio, culling densely layered field recordings and plunderphonic samplings which periodically break into beautiful songs with more recognizable instruments freely mixing influences of African American free jazz, Black punk, gospel\/negro spirituals, and divination rituals. The project documents a series of on location musical encounters and conversations between friends Esther Scanlund, Goda Trakumaite, Jesse Dewlow and Jim Strong. On display is a sensitivity to the first gesture, the finger print, the miniature. voice flutters through battery powered electronics competing with the sounds of summer insects in a palette of domestic psychedelia. Ambling not quite aimlessly but always in four somewhat different directions, EotA nurses a compost of sun-dappled experimentalism, whispered folk and shambolic pop. Amplifiers in the tree below circuitries of extension chords which weave patterns on the lawn. Note carefully, the appearance of the dog who drinks lavishly from fresh ceramic. The releases accompanying zine gives the viewer an insight behind the scenes of the album from recording to sourcing of the recycled material for packaging to a whole host of other corollary frolic.
