Alex Keller // Sleep room CD

  • Availability:

This CD was released in July 2024 by Texas-based experimental musician and mastering engineer Alex Keller through the Texas experimental label Elevator Bath.

Contains 7 tracks of low-flying drone sounds made from discarded computer servers, modem routers, homemade electromagnetic oscillators, vacuum cleaners, etc. Packaged in a 6-sided digipak with shrink wrap.

Below is a commentary by the label.

"Elevator Bath presents Alex Keller's stunning new album, Sleep Room. This marks Keller's return to the label following an exquisite collaborative LP with Sean O'Neill and a top-notch mastering job on a release by Adam Pacione and Thomas Bay (William Bayley). His first solo album in nearly ten years, since 2015's seminal "Black out", Sleep Room is a uniquely magnetic work that was well worth the wait.

Sources for these recordings include abandoned computer servers, vintage ECG POTS, modems/network routers, non-functioning laptops, UV light insect traps, LED lights, power supplies, city buses, commuter trains, homemade electromagnetic oscillators, stun guns, homemade Jacob's ladders, vintage vacuum cleaners, etc. All works (except the title track) are based on real-time studio improvisations, often made with multiple homemade electromagnetic transducers attached to gloves, or off-the-shelf electromagnetic microphones.

This unique array of instrumentation and techniques is hard not to be enthralled by. Though utterly unique in its methodology, the album is first and foremost a collection of meticulously rendered and expertly crafted abstract sound art. Shocks of silence and bursts of white noise collide with buzzing tones and distant drones, thunderous electrical pulses add to natural resonances and vibrations, making full use of the spatial sound field and frequency spectrum. The album is also a highly individual work with Keller's stamp on it. The instruments were built, recorded, mixed, mastered, and the cover art and photography were all done by Keller. This means that "Sleep Room" is unlike anyone else's work. The album is the culmination of Keller's uncompromising creative integrity combined with a total commitment to the process. The results speak for themselves. Amidst a lot of mundane work that could be called experimental music these days, "Sleep Room" stands out as a challenging and sophisticated work that is as satisfying as it is unconventional.

Elevator Bath:

"Elevator Bath is releasing "Sleep Room", the electrifying new album from Alex Keller. This marks Keller's return to the label following his exquisite collaborative LP with Sean O'Neill and top-notch mastering work for releases by Adam Pacione and Thomas Bey William Bailey. His first solo album in nearly a decade (since 2015's ingenious "Black out"), "Sleep Room" is a work of singular magnetism and well worth the wait.

Sources for these recordings include decommissioned computer server, vintage ECG POTS, modem/network router, non-functioning laptop, UV light insect trap, LED lights, power supplies, urban bus, commuter trains, homemade electromagnetic oscillators, stun gun, homemade Jacob's ladder, and vintage vacuum cleaner. All pieces (excluding the title track) are based on real-time studio improvisations, made with multiple homemade electromagnetic transducers often attached to gloves, as well as commercial electromagnetic microphones.
This uniquely peculiar array of both instrumentation and technique is nothing if not fascinating, and as a final product, "Sleep Room" easily lives up to this intrigue. Though the album is utterly distinctive in its methodology, it is first and foremost a meticulously rendered, expertly produced collection of abstract sound art. Jolts of static and bursts of white noise collide with buzzing tones and distant drones; throbbing electrical pulses join with natural resonances and vibrations, fully utilizing the stereo field and frequency spectra. The album is also a highly individual statement with every facet of its creation bearing Keller's stamp: instrument building, recording, mixing, mastering, as well as cover art and photography were all performed by the artist. In other words, "Sleep Room" simply resembles no one else's work. This album is the culmination of Keller's uncompromising creative integrity wedded to a total commitment to process. The results speak for themselves. Among so much rather pedestrian material which passes for experimental music in recent years, "Sleep Room" stands out and stands tall as a challenging and sophisticated work, as satisfying as it is anomalous."
