There was a certain atmosphere to the initial tracks I’d made; the mood felt quite clear, first in a wisp-like way, but present nevertheless. There's a sort of urban British grey to the album - and the sense of melancholy that comes with that - with influences from bass music, post-punk, shoegaze, drone, ambient and even folk music. Many of the tracks feature significant use and abuse of an Eventide harmonizer; most commonly used on dry, monophonic sounds like leads or vocals, he found himself running all sorts of sounds through it, from reverb drenched chords to multiple elements of the same track, often with the harmonizer struggling to keep pace.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eThe result is Gargantuan - a relentless stream of intense studio explorations, presented to the listener as two dazzlingly colourful long-form pieces. “To me it's an album where something is going on the whole time,” says Stephen. “It doesn’t give you chance to think. I guess it sort of reflects the emotional response to life in 2021. Social media in particular can leave me feeling a bit frazzled. He found there was something oddly comforting about the fractal repetitions and pixelated sunsets; though far from realistic, they held a beguiling beauty, a strange logic all of their own.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eStephen's music is often written in response to environments, so it was inevitable that his adventures in these vibrant computer- generated landscapes would somehow be reflected in the music he was making at the time.
