Full of radiant guitars, shuffling drumwork, and wide spaces, they glide like American roadside. As hushed and quietly beautiful as their debut, the serene atmosphere belies the anxieties in the lyrics. Like a diary written in the backseat, songwriter Blake Luley looks back at the places in the rearview and wonders about all the uncertainties waiting at his destination. Can home and happiness be carried with you, or are they forever elusive? Rainwater are hopeful, but deeply thoughtful, staring out the window. Saturn Return is also the sophomore album by Seattle band Rainwater, and represents a similar re-birth for the group. After moving across the country, a journey documented on the band's Place EP, Luley re-grouped Rainwater with new bandmates Drew and Amy Fitchette, Stephen Steen, and James Kasinger and began to take stock of his new surroundings and new life. The songs on Saturn Return are duly concerned with turning points and moments of transition, from the human to the astrological. It was recorded in his guest bedroom during a stressful couple years through graduate school and his first year as a teacher in the unholy year of 2020. In little pockets of time between school, a new job, and preparing to have his first child, he laid down bass lines, synth parts, and wrote songs. Lead singles, “Glorianne” and “Us Only”, are New Order-meets-Fleetwood Mac with pulsing drums and catchy hooks. “Glorianne” is a series of questions to Blake’s late grandmother about what happens after life.
