At the time, Shaun was working on cover art for this album. A deeply affecting collection of miniatures, Not Songs is the first release by Other Nothing, a new project from Paul Kintzing of German Error Message. This music grew out of a series of recording experiments, initially meant as preparation for a new German Error Message album (which eventually became Mend, released in 2019) that quickly bloomed and ripened into a delicate soundscape of their own. We share them with you now on tape, fully matured, brittle and transient, like the rattle of autumn's last leaves crumbling before their release. Written and recorded during a transitional period living at home with family, ben c, this is for you finds Jason reaching far back through layers of dust and memories, pulling remnants of the past back into the present. The result is a densely layered and intensely felt quilt of brief hauntings, punctuated by anxious pangs of remembrance and disarmingly abrasive bursts of emotional clarity. In contrast to Anemone Red’s stories told through carefully mapped intricacies and delicate arrangements, Heard From the Next Room is a diaristic collection of spontaneous composition for solo piano, recorded one blustery day in early 2022. Within, Cormier-O’Leary’s tendency toward considered restraint gives way to the unshielded joy of exploration and discovery. Framed as a surreptitious capture of a personal exercise, Heard From the Next Room is a reflection on the moments that bring us closer in spirit when we’re already nearby.
