Lately, I've been thinking a lot about the lifespan of cells. How cells develop, evolve, change, and eventually die. One of my best friends was diagnosed with metastatic lung cancer a few months ago. From our perspective, cancer is bad, but life is never human-centered. Life follows its own path, and most of it is out of our control. Today, thanks to research in epigenetics, we have discovered that the environment can change our DNA. Love, like sound, can change DNA. I think of my sound fragments as undifferentiated (or partially differentiated) cells, such as stem cells, whose fate is controlled by a complex intracellular molecular regulatory network. I adopted this perspective as a method of composition. Proximity, relationships, distribution, and interactions determine how sound behaves like a biological system. Life is a network, and we cannot exist without plants, fungi, and ultimately other humans. Sound provides a special framework for building complex systems of collisions, overlaps, and movements. It is a way of staying within the complexity that pervades our lives.
