What better time for Full Spectrum to share this raw, vital, and expansive live recording from Sharmi Basu [AKA Full Spectrum alum Beast Nest] and Fanciulla Gentile’s Felidae project?\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eAn ongoing concern since 2014, Felidae has to date only released a single self-published cassette, but they’ve carved out a niche for themselves as a towering live act, destroying basements throughout the Bay Area and beyond.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eIn the fall of 2020, well into the depths of the COVID-19 pandemic, the duo came together to generate an improvised live set for Jake Rodriguez’s live-streamed noise series, ‘PONIIA.’ The resulting document captures a moment of intimacy in the “here and now” amidst what, at the time, felt like an ever-increasing sense of personal distance and social isolation. As the pandemic now slumps into its third year, those divisions are beginning to set within our communities, becoming permanent features of the cultural landscape for future generations to reckon with.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eIt is within this context that the work found its resonance. “Katla” itself is a word with dual meanings, one being the Icelandic term for “kettle,” particularly in the context of volcanism\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e. It is the name of an enormous and still active snow-capped volcano whose last eruption was over a century ago, though researchers have recently detected harmonic tremors coming from the site – sustained releases of seismic and infrasonic energy due to magma and gasses escaping from deep within the Earth’s mantle, which typically precede or accompany full-scale volcanic eruptions.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e“Katla” is also the Hindi word for “slaughter.” Perhaps the less esoteric reading of the term when one considers the grander backdrop of the pandemic, which has caused continuous mass death while casting in stark relief the brittle and precarious nature of life under the yoke of global capitalism. Taken together, however, this duality becomes an engine for rebirth and renewal: as pressure amasses beneath us, something is bound to break through. Looking back – Full Spectrum welcomed a whole fresh crop of artists into our label family this year and published a whopping 23 [!] releases. Some of us even managed to play a few shows here and there, a marked improvement over 2020.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eTo round things out and close the book on the year that was, we are pleased to present the debut from California-born white settler writer, artist, and geographer Maya Weeks. Entitled ‘Tethers,’ this one is but a subtle breeze of an album, as brief and transitory as the ocean’s spray across your face. Clocking in at a svelte 16 minutes, though, ‘Tethers’ is no less lovely and impactful for its brevity.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eCo-produced with Andrew Weathers, who Weeks knows from her time at Mills College, ‘Tethers’ consists of collaged audio files captured between January and June of this year. Weeks grew up in Cayucos and she is now affiliated with the Bodega Marine Lab in Bodega Bay, where she conducts research on marine pollution. Sitting across the water from the cities of both Edinburgh and Dundee, yet also adjacent to the open North Sea, the Kingdom of Fife is both connected to the greater world and resolutely of itself. It can be reached from all directions by iconic bridges and yet is not an island, but such a landscape permits the existence of half-seen truths and spaces. ‘Birl of Unmap’ is a response to one such place – a place of several pasts and many names in West Fife that has existed as an open cast mine, the long gone pit village of Lassodie\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e, and most recently as a not-quite-fully realised land art vision of the post-modern architect Charles Jencks.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eCurrently known as St. Ninians, the area in question has existed in a strange limbo between purpose and public access for many years, though it was sold in 2021 for redevelopment as an eco-wellness centre. ‘Birl of Unmap’ is the telling of a place from different times and perspectives, of the land, of the art that Jencks installed there using decommissioned mining machinery, of the idea of the Final Void in both mining and cosmic terms and of what it means to know, to share a place and pass on bits of it with space allowed for retelling. Hailing from the Kingdom of Fife in Scotland, the trio has forged a new practice in creative dialogue and sonic experimentation, exploring abstract notions of ‘place’ and deconstructing its innate rhythms and sonic totems.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eFor the unfamiliar, a bit of vocabulary context may be required – “birl” is a Scots word that means to spin or whirl.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eTo wit, ‘Birl of Unmap’ is an attempt to unravel the dynamic layers that make Fife an area of both artistic and physical interest, as well as interpreting something of the perceived language of the place. Sitting across the water from the cities of both Edinburgh and Dundee, yet also adjacent to the open North Sea, the Kingdom of Fife is both connected to the greater world and resolutely of itself. It can be reached from all directions by iconic bridges and yet is not an island, but such a landscape permits the existence of half-seen truths and spaces. ‘Birl of Unmap’ is a response to one such place – a place of several pasts and many names in West Fife that has existed as an open cast mine, the long gone pit village of Lassodie\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e, and most recently as a not-quite-fully realised land art vision of the post-modern architect Charles Jencks.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eCurrently known as St. Ninians, the area in question has existed in a strange limbo between purpose and public access for many years, though it was sold in 2021 for redevelopment as an eco-wellness centre. ‘Birl of Unmap’ is the telling of a place from different times and perspectives, of the land, of the art that Jencks installed there using decommissioned mining machinery, of the idea of the Final Void in both mining and cosmic terms and of what it means to know, to share a place and pass on bits of it with space allowed for retelling. Infused with field recordings from the earth, water, air, and industrial installations on-site, the album seeks to give space to the energies of a place and the landscape legacies of human and more than human interactions with it.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eDrawing on academic research, oral histories, and the experiences of other Fife-based artists, as well as former miners and residents of the site, ‘Birl of Unmap’ stands as more than the sum total of aesthetic tropes, embodying an ambitious call to consider how we balance our own experiences and understandings with those of others.
