The following is a commentary by the writer himself.

"This album is the culmination of many different interests. Honestly, it's more of a visceral intonation, clashing oscillator frequencies to create pulsating movements and rich overtones.

"Using broadcast station test equipment to create this work got me thinking about all the radio frequencies floating around us and where these signals originate from. This led me to think about amateur broadcasting and how that has changed with the advent of video sharing and social media, as well as how private home videos from the past are now available to unintended audiences. The album as a whole is inspired by my continuing fascination with the work of Glenn Branca, who has influenced my work since I was a teenager."

Tape Loop Orchestra:

"Drones In The Air is Andrew's first experiments with 'intuitive' just intonation. Forgoing the synths and magnetic heads of his TLO work for a minimal set up of oscillators, Lyra-8 and a handful of pedals, to keep a precise focus on the creation of microtonal spectrums.

Over the course of four austere, slow moving parts, harmonic textures are built from the clashing frequencies of the oscillators revealing over tones that range from the ominous to the cacophonous, that are adjacent to Glenn Branca's micro-tonal workouts if he had worked with oscillators instead of guitars. The pure tones of the oscillators provide the building blocks for audio alchemy to occur, the simple sine waves being transmuted to spectral harmonics, air-bending, oblique noise sculpture."

Artist statement by Andrew Hargreaves :

"This album is a confluence of various interests that have coalesced to form Drones In The Air. These are my first experiments using just intonation, more intuitive intonation in all honesty, colliding frequencies from the oscillators to create beating movements and rich overtones.

Using broadcast test equipment to create this work made me think of all the radio frequencies floating all around us and where these signals originated from. This lead me to think of amateur broadcasts and how this has changed with the advent of video sharing and social media, and how private home videos from the past are now available for an unintended audience. The album as a whole is inspired by my continued fascination with the work of Glenn Branca, who has been an influence on my practice since my teenage years."
