{"id":8322695168250,"title":"DRUNK DRIVING \/\/ DRUNK DRIVING CD","handle":"drunk-driving-drunk-driving-cd","description":"\u003cp\u003e1980年代初頭にアメリカ・NYを拠点に活動していたハードコア・ブルースバンドDRUNK DRIVINGが、2024年4月に東京のノイズ作家Scum主宰レーベルSlug Tapesからリリースした再発CDです。\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLo-Fiハードコア・ブルース6曲を収録。\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e以下、Joe Truck (The Black Scorpio Underground)とコサカイフミオ(Incapacitants)による解説です。\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003e\"1980年代初頭のNYのアンダーグラウンドシーンは狂っていた。\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003e当時のNYシーンはごく小さなアンダーグラウンドがあり、スカム、パンク、ハードコアがごった煮になっていた。俺は当時CHOP SHOPというバンドに在籍していて、SCRATCH ACIDやBUTTHOLE SURFERS、SONIC YOUTH等とタイバンしていたんだ。\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eそこでDRUNK DRIVINGに出会ったんだ。\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003e彼らはステージ上で非常に激しく、また非常に雑な演奏だったが本当に強烈だった。\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003ePeter Missingは素晴らしいフロントマンだったよ。\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eライブパフォーマンスを例えるなら、ハードコア、パンク、ブルースの融合でPUSSY GALOREにとても似ていた。音はとても騒々しいが演奏は集中していた。パンクシーンの一部でありながら外見はGlenn Brancaが居たRAT AT RAT RやHI SHERIFFS OF BLUEに近かった。\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003e時にはほとんどNO WAVEに近い演奏もあった。観客との交流も多く、「不法占拠者パンク」の雰囲気だった。\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eしかし、アウトサイダー\/エクスペリメンタル・ロックの枠組みの中では誰よりも攻撃的だった。\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003e当時の音で最も近いのはSWANSとRAT AT RAT Rだろう。\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eまだどちらも当時は全く人気がなかったけどね。\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eDRUNK DRIVINGは真のアンダーグラウンドだった。そしてとてもアウトサイダーだった。\" -Joe Truck (The Black Scorpio Underground)\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003e\"2024年の初っ端にとてつもなくヤバいブツが届いた！ニューヨークの伝説的ハイパーインダストリアルバンド、ミッシング・ファンデーションのリーダー、ピーター・ミッシングがそれ以前に在籍していた1980年結成83年解散のバンド、ドランク・ドライビングが1983年カセットのみでリリースした唯一の録音音源の復刻だ。\u003cbr\u003eピーターといえば、まずはミッシング・ファンデーションのことから語らねばなるまい。ミッシング・ファンデーションは1984年、ドイツのハンブルグで結成された。当時はKMFDMのメンバーも在籍していたそうだが、翌85年ピ－ターはニューヨークに戻ってバンドを再編し、87年には1stアルバムをリリースする。続く「1933 Your House Is Mine」 (88年)、「Demise 」(89年)でズタズタになったロックビートとメタル・ジャンクやノイズが融解しながら流出させるリズムとリバーヴにディストーションをかけるといった独特の音響処理から導き出された音楽は聞く者の度肝を抜き高い世評を得るが、彼らの”悪名”を広げたのはその過激極まりないライヴ・パフォーマンスだった。ドラム缶などのメタルジャンクをひっぱたいてノイズの塊を演奏し、生玉ねぎを食いちぎっては嘔吐、それを客席に投げ込む。怒号とノイズが溢れる中、自分の身体に火を着けて客席に飛び込んだり、挙句は反発した客とガチの喧嘩を始めるなど、まるで憎悪を扇動するかのようなパフォーマンスはバンドのライブというよりストリートでの暴動の現場を思わせるものだった。これが原因でCBGBなどいくつもの会場から出禁を食らった。もちろんこの時点でステージでメタルジャンクを演奏しステージを破壊するなどのパフォーマンスの手法は同時代のベルリンのアインシュトルツェンデ・ノイバウテンやオーストラリアからイギリスに渡ったSPKなどのバンドが採用しており、ミッシング・ファンデーションが独占特許というわけではない。しかし彼らがノイバウテン等と異なったのは、彼らのパフォーマンスが単にステージ上の表象にとどまらない、現実のストリートとそのパフォーマンスを接続しようとしたことにある。彼らは有名なイカマークのロゴ（まぁ、そう呼ぶのは自分の周辺だけで、本当はカクテルグラスをひっくり返したもので、「Party's over」と呼ばれているらしい。）をニューヨークの街中に書き散らしたり様々ステートメントを発表するといった活動を展開する。あげくには実際の暴動扇動に関与したという容疑で警察の捜査対象になったりとステージ上にとどまらない、見る者をまさにリアルなストリートの現場を巻き込み体験させようとする表現ポリシーは多くの支持を得た。自分は1992年にC.C.C.C.というノイズバンドのメンバーとしてニューヨークに行ったことがあるのだが、この「Party's over」ロゴを街中で見かけ、さらに深夜の廃墟のような裏町のストリートでがたいのいいアフロアメリカンのお兄ちゃんに「Hey,Big Guy!」と呼びかけられたことがあるが、この体験に彼らの表現のリアリティの欠片を感じたのである。さすがに近年の彼らの演奏、パフォーマンスは動画サイトなどで確認する限りは以前よりは整理されたものになっているが、その生々しい衝動を表現しようという意欲は依然衰えていないように見受けられる。\u003cbr\u003e前置きが長くなってしまった。この音源のメンバーはヴォーカルのピーター、ミッシング・ファンデーションのドラマーでもあるクリス・イーガン、そしてベース、ヴォーカルのタマ、ギターのジェフ・ホリディの4人。バンド初期にはソニック・ユース、プッシー・ガロア在籍で有名なボブ・バートがドラマーとして参加していたという。まさにニューヨーク・アンダーグラウンド闇コネクションの表出というべきメンツの集合だ。では、ミッシング・ファンデーションの前身バンドともいえるドランク・ドライビングの音源は単にその基礎素材、史料としての価値しかないのか？断じて否である！ロックバンドとしてはベーシックの4人によるシンプルな編成から叩き出される骨太のサウンドそれ自体が大変魅力的なのだ。丸太を鈍重な斧で叩き切るかのように繰り出されるドラムス、派手なフレーズをひけらかすのではなく重々しいリフを繰り返すギターとベース、そして音高は高くはないが感情を扇動するようなピーターのヴォーカルと若干のノイズというアンサンブルが繰り出す音楽は聞くものの聴覚を引きずり回すようにとてつもなくヘヴィに鳴り響く。その隙間にふっと挟み込まれるメランコリックなメロディの断片は感情をも揺さぶる。それらはオムニバス盤「ノー・ニューヨーク」（78年リリース）の系譜も感じさせるアヴァン・ロック、「ノー・ウェイヴ」の文脈にあるととらえる向きもあるかもしれない。しかし、ノー・ウェイヴ派が加速による高密度への感覚変容を目指したのに対し、ドランク・ドライビングは逆に演奏をスローダウンすることでロックの枠組みの外へ出て感覚変容を目指したところに相違点があると考える。それはむしろ同時代のソニック・ユース（81年結成）やスワンズ（82年結成）らとその方向性を共有していたのではと考える。それは誰が誰に影響したとか模倣したとかではなく、いろんな場から同時多発的に発生したのがこの頃のニューヨーク・アンダーグラウンドだったのだろう。そしてここで聞けるドランク・ドライビングの音楽はそうした面々と比較しても十分オリジナリティを有しているといえる。ただ、他のバンド達がその後自らの音楽の中での革新を目指したのに対し、その後のミッシング・ファンデーションは社会と直接コミットすることを音楽、活動を目指したという所で道が分かれたのかもしれない。しかし、このドランク・ドライビングで培った強靭なサウンド、ビートがなければ、ミッシングファンデーションの音楽にリアリティを与えることはできなかっただろうということも容易に推察できる。\u003cbr\u003eさぁ、俺の細かい御託、能書きはここまで。どうでもいいことだ。ついでにニューヨーク・アンダーグラウンドがどうしたとかいう歴史の話もシャットアウトして、とにかくドランク・ドライビングの音を大音量で聞いてくれ。脳みその中で暴動が起きること間違いなしだ。There's a Riot Goin' On! data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eDRUNK DRIVINGは真のアンダーグラウンドだった。そしてとてもアウトサイダーだった。\" -Joe Truck (The Black Scorpio Underground)\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003e\"2024年の初っ端にとてつもなくヤバいブツが届いた！ニューヨークの伝説的ハイパーインダストリアルバンド、ミッシング・ファンデーションのリーダー、ピーター・ミッシングがそれ以前に在籍していた1980年結成83年解散のバンド、ドランク・ドライビングが1983年カセットのみでリリースした唯一の録音音源の復刻だ。\u003cbr\u003eピーターといえば、まずはミッシング・ファンデーションのことから語らねばなるまい。ミッシング・ファンデーションは1984年、ドイツのハンブルグで結成された。当時はKMFDMのメンバーも在籍していたそうだが、翌85年ピ－ターはニューヨークに戻ってバンドを再編し、87年には1stアルバムをリリースする。続く「1933 Your House Is Mine」 (88年)、「Demise 」(89年)でズタズタになったロックビートとメタル・ジャンクやノイズが融解しながら流出させるリズムとリバーヴにディストーションをかけるといった独特の音響処理から導き出された音楽は聞く者の度肝を抜き高い世評を得るが、彼らの”悪名”を広げたのはその過激極まりないライヴ・パフォーマンスだった。ドラム缶などのメタルジャンクをひっぱたいてノイズの塊を演奏し、生玉ねぎを食いちぎっては嘔吐、それを客席に投げ込む。怒号とノイズが溢れる中、自分の身体に火を着けて客席に飛び込んだり、挙句は反発した客とガチの喧嘩を始めるなど、まるで憎悪を扇動するかのようなパフォーマンスはバンドのライブというよりストリートでの暴動の現場を思わせるものだった。これが原因でCBGBなどいくつもの会場から出禁を食らった。もちろんこの時点でステージでメタルジャンクを演奏しステージを破壊するなどのパフォーマンスの手法は同時代のベルリンのアインシュトルツェンデ・ノイバウテンやオーストラリアからイギリスに渡ったSPKなどのバンドが採用しており、ミッシング・ファンデーションが独占特許というわけではない。しかし彼らがノイバウテン等と異なったのは、彼らのパフォーマンスが単にステージ上の表象にとどまらない、現実のストリートとそのパフォーマンスを接続しようとしたことにある。彼らは有名なイカマークのロゴ（まぁ、そう呼ぶのは自分の周辺だけで、本当はカクテルグラスをひっくり返したもので、「Party's over」と呼ばれているらしい。）をニューヨークの街中に書き散らしたり様々ステートメントを発表するといった活動を展開する。あげくには実際の暴動扇動に関与したという容疑で警察の捜査対象になったりとステージ上にとどまらない、見る者をまさにリアルなストリートの現場を巻き込み体験させようとする表現ポリシーは多くの支持を得た。自分は1992年にC.C.C.C.というノイズバンドのメンバーとしてニューヨークに行ったことがあるのだが、この「Party's over」ロゴを街中で見かけ、さらに深夜の廃墟のような裏町のストリートでがたいのいいアフロアメリカンのお兄ちゃんに「Hey,Big Guy!」と呼びかけられたことがあるが、この体験に彼らの表現のリアリティの欠片を感じたのである。さすがに近年の彼らの演奏、パフォーマンスは動画サイトなどで確認する限りは以前よりは整理されたものになっているが、その生々しい衝動を表現しようという意欲は依然衰えていないように見受けられる。\u003cbr\u003e前置きが長くなってしまった。この音源のメンバーはヴォーカルのピーター、ミッシング・ファンデーションのドラマーでもあるクリス・イーガン、そしてベース、ヴォーカルのタマ、ギターのジェフ・ホリディの4人。バンド初期にはソニック・ユース、プッシー・ガロア在籍で有名なボブ・バートがドラマーとして参加していたという。まさにニューヨーク・アンダーグラウンド闇コネクションの表出というべきメンツの集合だ。では、ミッシング・ファンデーションの前身バンドともいえるドランク・ドライビングの音源は単にその基礎素材、史料としての価値しかないのか？断じて否である！ロックバンドとしてはベーシックの4人によるシンプルな編成から叩き出される骨太のサウンドそれ自体が大変魅力的なのだ。丸太を鈍重な斧で叩き切るかのように繰り出されるドラムス、派手なフレーズをひけらかすのではなく重々しいリフを繰り返すギターとベース、そして音高は高くはないが感情を扇動するようなピーターのヴォーカルと若干のノイズというアンサンブルが繰り出す音楽は聞くものの聴覚を引きずり回すようにとてつもなくヘヴィに鳴り響く。その隙間にふっと挟み込まれるメランコリックなメロディの断片は感情をも揺さぶる。それらはオムニバス盤「ノー・ニューヨーク」（78年リリース）の系譜も感じさせるアヴァン・ロック、「ノー・ウェイヴ」の文脈にあるととらえる向きもあるかもしれない。しかし、ノー・ウェイヴ派が加速による高密度への感覚変容を目指したのに対し、ドランク・ドライビングは逆に演奏をスローダウンすることでロックの枠組みの外へ出て感覚変容を目指したところに相違点があると考える。それはむしろ同時代のソニック・ユース（81年結成）やスワンズ（82年結成）らとその方向性を共有していたのではと考える。それは誰が誰に影響したとか模倣したとかではなく、いろんな場から同時多発的に発生したのがこの頃のニューヨーク・アンダーグラウンドだったのだろう。そしてここで聞けるドランク・ドライビングの音楽はそうした面々と比較しても十分オリジナリティを有しているといえる。ただ、他のバンド達がその後自らの音楽の中での革新を目指したのに対し、その後のミッシング・ファンデーションは社会と直接コミットすることを音楽、活動を目指したという所で道が分かれたのかもしれない。しかし、このドランク・ドライビングで培った強靭なサウンド、ビートがなければ、ミッシングファンデーションの音楽にリアリティを与えることはできなかっただろうということも容易に推察できる。\u003cbr\u003eさぁ、俺の細かい御託、能書きはここまで。どうでもいいことだ。ついでにニューヨーク・アンダーグラウンドがどうしたとかいう歴史の話もシャットアウトして、とにかくドランク・ドライビングの音を大音量で聞いてくれ。脳みその中で暴動が起きること間違いなしだ。There's
