" an elegant decay amassed from the sounds of detritus. that may be an apt introduction to the work of jo montgomerie. of course, the helen scarsdale agency has a long standing infatuation with disintegrated sound in various forms. publish her work! that said, montgomerie has a fascinating strategy to her long-form smears of blackened mascara ambient and smoldered noise. As a teenager she was a classically trained musician with an eye towards a career as a concert pianist; but a bad audition may have closed that door yet it opened another in her career in sound design, foley work, and post-production. it may be of note to some, that she was an uncredited soul responsible for thousands upon thousands of audio clips rendered for boomkat during a lengthy tenure at that institution. These forms of production and editing necessitate a flawlessness which also hides the process entirely; and montgomerie began to ruminate on that which was left on the cuttingroom floor (or the digital version of such a space). And thus, she took these unwanted sounds, telescoped them into sinewy drones, forced them to collapse in a crucible of noise, and even rarified their essence into fluid harmonic tones.

the source material to much of her work is the urban landscape of her manchester home, but she also will recontextualize traditional instruments and even the creaks, groans, and snaps of her own body. become audible. They still address a heavy melancholy augmented through a dilated sense of time. from industry home becomes a tantalizing, uncanny album of the once familiar, adjacent to those heemann / chalk productions as mirror and the environmental abstractions of jana winderen. "

It was late, I was trying to finish something after everyone else had gone home. The tone came from nowhere and cut through the air for a second. Then it abruptly stopped. Then a series of beeps, like someone was dialling. Then silence. Initially spooked, I realised that, moving some papers around my always cluttered work desk, I’d knocked the phone off the hook. This routine – a held tone then fake dialing - the phone goes through if you’ve picked it up but not made a call. An attempt to get your attention perhaps. To fill an awkward silence maybe.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eI put the phone back, slightly off the hook, and recorded it with the voice recorder on my mobile phone. It picked up the same routine, with some added background noise from inside and outside my office in central London. It was late, I was trying to finish something after everyone else had gone home. The tone came from nowhere and cut through the air for a second. Then it abruptly stopped. Then a series of beeps, like someone was dialling. Then silence. Initially spooked, I realised that, moving some papers around my always cluttered work desk, I’d knocked the phone off the hook. This routine – a held tone then fake dialing - the phone goes through if you’ve picked it up but not made a call. An attempt to get your attention perhaps. To fill an awkward silence maybe.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eI put the phone back, slightly off the hook, and recorded it with the voice recorder on my mobile phone. It picked up the same routine, with some added background noise from inside and outside my office in central London. This is a cassette independently released in March 2024 by experimental musicians Beachers from London, England. Contains 3 minimal music songs created using only the sounds of the office phone. *Please feel free to contact us as we will send you the digital sound source free of charge.The following is an explanation by the artist himself. "The only sound on 'Off the hook' is the phone at my day job. Late at night, after everyone had gone home, I was finishing something, and the sound came from everywhere. It cut the air for a moment. Then it suddenly stopped. Then I heard a series of beeps, like someone was dialing. I was surprised at first, but then I saw the papers on my work desk. While you're at it, you realize you've taken your phone off the hook.This routine of a hold tone followed by a fake dial doesn't work when you pick up the phone. Maybe trying to get attention, maybe to fill an awkward silence, I took the phone off the hook and put it back on, recording it in and out of my office in central London. The same routine was recorded, with additional noise added, and the recording was cut, moved, and processed to create the eight tracks of Off the Hook, but nothing else was done. I haven't added anything. It's mostly delays and pitch shifts. The last track is a full playback of the original phone call. It feels appropriate to me, the phone call itself, the situation, and the location. There's something. But I'm not sure what it said.
