"Mary Jane Leach is a composer whose focus is on the physics and acoustic properties of sound and how they interact with space. She played a key role in New York's pioneering downtown scene with Arthur Russell, Ellen Fulman, Peter Zummo, Philip Koer and Arnold Dreiblatt, and spent many years preserving and re-evaluating the work of Julius Eastman after his death in 1990, compiling Unjust Malaise (2005). He published Julius Eastman and His Music (2015), an edited version of Gay Guerrilla (2015).

Woodwind Multiples contains four pieces for the same instrumental polyphony: four bass flutes, nine oboes, nine clarinets, and seven bassoons. Each piece works closely with the unique sound of each instrument, combining pitches to create other, sometimes unexpected, timbres, mainly combinations, interfering sounds, and rhythmic patterns. What you hear is what happened naturally, without any processing or manipulation.4B9 (9/7) performed by Manuel Zulia is a work for four bass flutes. It is a revision of 4x8, written in 4 for the Downtown Ensemble and performed only once for the unusual instrumentation of alto flute, English horn (originally bass oboe), clarinet and voice. Xantippe's Rebuke (1985) is a work written for Libby Van Cleve for eight recorded oboes and one live oboe. The eight tape parts are equal and dependent, and the solo part is intended to be a solo with tape accompaniment. The piece takes advantage of the unique sound of the oboe, starting with the unison interval that produces the richest sound, and building the piece from there.By notating naturally occurring pitches and rhythm patterns and playing them later, other pitches and rhythm patterns are created.Charybdis (2022) by Sam Dunscombe is a work for solo clarinet and eight tape clarinets.A somewhat obscure reference to John Dowland's work Weep You No More is combined with the sonic phenomena produced by Dowland's melody and the chords that underpin it. Feu de Joie (4), written for bassoonist Shannon Pete, is a tribute to the bassoon and its wonderful tone. The song consists of 1985 parts (1 tape performances and 8 "live performance").Bassoons recorded on tape are combined to create a sound floor that takes advantage of the unique qualities of the bassoon, creating combinations and interfering sounds, starting with a unison interval and creating a rich sound from there. Most of the notes and phrases that follow come naturally and are notated later in the piece, which in turn yields other notes and phrases.Engineered by Manuel Zulia, Bryce Goggin, Sam Dunscombe and mastered by Rashad Becker.
