" Belgian and French singer, songwriter, and producer Penelope Antena presents her radiant sophomore full-length album, "Beamorose." Across thirteen compositions, Beamorose expands on Penelope's signature shapeshifting vocal manipulation with warm acoustic experimentations, twisting traditional Americana and Gospel stylings into a unique multilayered rendition of art-pop.

Penelope Antena is the heiress to a musical legacy of mythical stature, living and creating on a mountaintop in the Occitanie region of southern France. Her grandfather, Belgian pianist and Jazz-Rock Pioneer Marc Moulin (Placebo, Telex) and mother, founding member of the 80s electro-samba group Antena, Isabelle Powaga, played a tremendous role in supporting and inspiring Penelope to shine in the shadow of their creative heritage.

"Beamorose," a follow-up to her 2019 debut "Antelope" (KowTow Records), is the most recent iteration of Penelope propelling her family's musical tradition into the 21st century. Contrary to her previous solo recordings, Penelope aimed to create an album galvanized by trials and experiments in ensemble performance --a body of work which radiates a sense of community and warmth. The album's aesthetic totality comes as the fruit of an impromptu trip to America's midwest, where Penelope befriended and recruited producer Brendan Forrest and an all-star cast of local musicians to impart their virtuosic talents on her demos.

These works ring three-dimensional and exhibit the true dynamic range of Penelope's natural vocal abilities --both as a nod to her newfound inspirations in gospel and Americana, as well as in an attempt to communicate a height of sincerity in her music.

Whether through her explorations in group performance or declarations of solitude through tender ballads, Penelope hopes listeners of these songs will be comforted by a feeling of intimacy relatable to an array of personal context. about the power, and successes, of channeling budding connections, friendship, and community into a singular artistic expression. In these locales were discovered the improvised bass guitar figures to Kidd’s dance which transformed into songs during pandemic isolation, then brought to the ensemble of drummer\/percussionist Sheridan Riley (of Alvvays), multi-instrumentalist Walt McClements, and on a couple, guitarist Meg Duffy (of Hand Habits). They build and gleefully destroy and rebuild again. There is joy in the ensemble’s shared queer identity- an identity that refuses to be agreed upon. This record too challenges any easy genre or definition. This record is sculpture and portrait of times and loved ones gone past. It is spiritual and it is psychedelic. In songs like “Glacial Fanfare,” I whisper to myself: it hurts now and it’s gonna hurt more, but then it’s gonna stop hurting. In “Euphoric Recall,” I understand how even the worst storms can offer gentleness. In “Braid,” I know trust is about bodies in contact, feet hitting the ground day after day. I return to the urgent question posed in the title of the track: “Which One Is You?” The answer is a low steady bass marked by chaotic and bright fluctuations of sound. When I listen, I feel the crunchiness and static of being-in-the-world as it is mediated by time. Without us knowing, our devices capture sounds we may have missed the first time around. And they land like a sucker punch, snapping us back to the present, tuning our attention to what surrounds us.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eTrue presence in any given moment is one of the most difficult things to cultivate and sustain. When it is offered, I treasure it like a rare gift. Listening to Doubles, I sink into the generosity of Duffy and Uhlmann’s offerings. In songs like “Glacial Fanfare,” I whisper to myself: it hurts now and it’s gonna hurt more, but then it’s gonna stop hurting. In “Euphoric Recall,” I understand how even the worst storms can offer gentleness. In “Braid,” I know trust is about bodies in contact, feet hitting the ground day after day. I return to the urgent question posed in the title of the track: “Which One Is You?” The answer is a low steady bass marked by chaotic and bright fluctuations of sound. The sonic response leaves me knowing: Both. All.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe intimacy in these songs dances like shadows - providing relief even as they slip away.
