"I stayed at memu earth lab, based in Memu (Taiju Town), located in the southern part of Tokachi in the eastern part of Hokkaido, for a total of about five weeks from winter to spring in 2 and 2021, and recorded the sounds of various places in the surrounding area. I loaded my recording equipment into my car and drove around the vast land thinking about where I should go today. There are forests and rivers in the surrounding area, and lakes and ponds are scattered along the coast. Once you leave the city, you hardly see any cars or people passing by. On the other hand, you can occasionally see wild foxes, cranes, and squirrels, and there are animal footprints scattered on the snow. I parked my car in a suitable place, shouldered my bag containing my equipment, and walked until I found an interesting spot, a spot that seemed like it might be possible to record something. The various sounds I happened to come across in this way are recorded in this work. I also spoke to people who live in this area. I was interested in what kind of sounds they listen to and how they listen to them in their daily lives. When I go outside the bungalow where I was staying on a snowy morning, I am shocked by the silence, so quiet that I feel like my ears are blocked. Even in a place where it feels like I can only hear the sounds of nature, the microphone captures various sounds associated with human activities. For example, the sound of a large truck driving on the national highway, the sound of a hunter shooting his prey in the mountains, the sound of an airplane passing overhead, the sound of an outdoor unit of a neighboring house, and of course the sounds I make unconsciously. Still, a place with little background noise and where you can hear small sounds clearly is valuable in itself. This is exactly such a place. I try to capture the environmental sounds and voices I encountered at Memu as the voice of this land without distinguishing between them. What kind of world will emerge through the act of listening carefully to the voices of the land, recording them, and listening to the recorded sounds? The word "Memu" is said to mean "a place where a spring springs and fish gather" in Ainu language.
