Artist statement:

"pinkfoot's fragments are cut from vocal improvisations done in the house while the baby slept – just a mic and a reel-to-reel tape emulator: there's sound poetry, Ami Yoshida/Junko overidentification, some rattling on. Compression and EQ are instruments and also feature. I projected some of the snippets into different environments—it's often good to drag withdrawn things outside—and populated others (my partner and daughter, my father-in-law, geese). Uncanny/on the cusp of too intimate/spectral but mucky – that's the hope. I'm just trying to say hi and then listen; maybe you'll say it back.'

This work features the Tohoku folk song Nanyatoyara. Comes with a 20 page booklet. Below is an explanation by the label. "Yuyou Sanzan x M Records restart! It's finally Tohoku! The 5th installment of the folk song excavation series supervised by Yauyo Sanzan is a vertical bombing Bon dance tune for the floor, DROP ``Nanya Toyara'' from Ninohe City in the northern part of Iwate Prefecture!! I didn't know that the "current tense" of Bon Odori songs was so dangerous!!! Since 2019, when the coronavirus was rampant, folk song preservation societies in various places have stopped their activities and have stopped performing and practicing at Bon Odori and recitals. Even the meeting was forced to be cancelled. Along with this, we were forced to suspend the release of the folk song excavation of Yauyo x M. By sticking to the folk songs of the ``now,'' they had no choice but to stop releasing songs during the coronavirus pandemic, when singing stopped. In 2024, the situation gradually improved, and our release plan, which we had been working on even before the coronavirus, finally came to fruition. "Nanya Toyara", which will be released this time, is said to be the oldest Bon dance in Tohoku, widely passed down in the area that straddles the northern part of Iwate Prefecture and the former Nanbu domain territory of Aomori. This tranquil Bon dance, which repeats the single phrase ``nanya toyara'' over and over again, is known as the ``mystery song,'' and there are various theories about its origin. The most famous one is the ``Hebrew theory,'' which is said to be associated with the legend of Christ's tomb, but its origin is unknown. There are many Bon dance songs and work songs in the lineage of this song, such as ``Tanabe Oshimako,'' ``Torajosama,'' ``Tenma Miyoko,'' and even the Hokkaido representative folk song, ``Donan Bon Uta.'' It can be said to be one of the foundations of folk songs. This work includes three versions of "Nanyatoyara" recorded by the Ninohe City Nanyatoyara Preservation Society, which is active in Ninohe City, northern Iwate Prefecture: 2002 recording, 2015 recording, and 2023 recording. The overwhelming tension of the scene-specific version blows away the exoticism that has been associated with this song as a ``mysterious song.'' The lyrics are improvised and connected to the drums like a vertical bombing, making it an extremely dangerous song. Although calling itself a "preservation society," the Ninohe City Nanyatoyara Preservation Society, which is vigorously patting (improving and developing) Nanyatoyara into its modern form, has broken the stereotype that "folk songs = old stories" and restarted after overcoming the coronavirus pandemic.
