Dutch experimental musician Harold Schellinx will launch in July 2022 with the Greek experimental labelA limited edition CDr of 50 from Coherent States.

Includes 8 minimalist sounds made with only typing sounds during university lectures.It is out of print.Below is an explanation by the label.

In the autumn of 2018, a close friend of Harold Schellinx enrolled as an art history undergraduate at the Paris 1st Panthéon-Sorbonne University UFR3.Since French is not her native language, she recorded many of her live lectures with the Dictaphone app on her iPhone so that she could re-listen to some or all of them over time.During her lectures, students often take notes on their laptop keyboards.The sounds of these students taking notes and typing become a chorus at the same time, followed by a sustained, multi-layered whispering and whispering of machines for almost the entire lecture time.And occasionally it fades out from the background to the foreground.It was a brief moment when the speaker paused and stood still.

Harold Sherinx has access to this recording and has deleted all of the lecturer's words.As a result, while capturing the words spoken by an art history lecturer into a digital text file, the sound of thousands of electric bugs chirping and singing in unison, creating this astonishing seascape by blaring a number of laptop keyboards at high speed. and a sound like rain was left behind.This typing chorus is also accompanied by student movements and environmental sounds such as coughs and sneezes.Especially during the early days of the coronavirus pandemic, lectures were on the verge of shutting down, right before college classes moved from physical rooms to virtual zooms.

The "Histoire de l'Art" cdr, available from Coherent States, is a history lecture without the history part.The teacher speaks words, which become phrases, which students hear and understand in some way.In the student's mind, the words are recombined, often interpreted into different phrases or words, and the letters are stored one by one in the laptop's memory by pressing the corresponding keys on the computer keyboard. It is also an audio record that records the interesting analog-to-digital data transfer process of transferring it to the teacher's teaching and saving it as a digital text file that understands the instructor's teaching.This album makes you listen to it.

Harold Sherinx is an artist, author, improviser and creator of unusual music. In addition to being a member of Young Lions and other post-punk bands in the late 70s, he was one of the first to start the 'ultra' movement (the Dutch version of what has come to be known internationally as 'post-punk experimental pop'). , co-founder, editor and London correspondent of the Dutch contemporary music magazine Vinyl.He studied formal music and computer-aided composition at the Institute of Sonology and mathematics and its foundations at the University of Amsterdam.He was a mentor to important pioneers of 80s industrial music, like Nigel Jacklin and his Alien Brains project, of which he was also a short-lived member.He is a dictaphone experimenter, member of the eclectic media duo 'okoi', and curator of the online 'found tapes exhibition'.He is a member of the Paris-based electroacoustic improvisational quartet Diktat, and released 'Tour De Force' (CS-2016) on Coherent States in 7.

"In the fall of 2018 a close friend of Harold Schellinx registered as an undergraduate student in art history at the Université Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne UFR3. As French is not her mother tongue, she recorded the many live-lectures she was attending with a dictaphone application on her iPhone, so as to be able to eventually re-listen to, all or parts of, some of them. During these lectures a substantial fraction of the students took notes, typing them on the keyboards of their laptops. students' note-taking-typing simultaneously made for a grand choir, a persistent and multi-layered mechanical whisper- and whimpering that lasted for almost all of a lecture's duration. And every now and then from background it faded into foreground. the snippets of time in which the lecturer halted her or his speaking, and kept still.

Harold Schellinx was given access to these recordings from which he then removed all of the lecturers' words. What was left is this amazing ocean/rain-like sound, as of a thousand electric insects, nibbling and singing in unison, brought forth by many , many laptop keyboards' hi-speed rattling, while capturing the words spoken by the art history lecturer in some or other digital text file., of students moving, coughing and sneezing, especially in those lectures that took place in the early days of the corona pandemic, shortly before confinement and hence before the university's classes moved from physical rooms to virtual zooms.

"The cover picture is a mashup that one evening Chen Yungwei made of two classic French paintings, that both date from the 1830's, a little less than two centuries ago: the 'Vénus Anadyomène' (also called 'Vénus marine', Venus of the sea) by Théodore Chassériau, presented at the Paris Salon in 1839, and the Study (Young male nude seated beside the Sea, in French: Jeune homme nu assis au bord de la mer, figure d'étude), painted in 1835 by Hippolyte Flandrin while in residency in Rome (the artist had won the Prix de Rome in 1832)."
