"Chantal Michelle's latest work is an immersive composition in four movements, originally presented as a multi-channel installation but reworked for stereo. Like her previous work on Dinzu, Chantal Michelle exquisitely captures the raw and essential processes of the natural world, and here the song's title evokes the layered, granular texture of geological formations, as well as the collapse of love. It represents the behavior and trajectory of the sound of a composition conceptualized as a metaphor.

Michel, along with Joanna Matley (viola) and Lea Bertucci (alto saxophone), melodically express these textures. These melodies do not function as structural markers of the song, nor do they simply elaborate the underlying texture.

"Chantal Michelle's latest work is an immersive composition across four movements, originally presented as a multi-channel installation and reworked for stereo. As with her previous release on Dinzu, Michelle exquisitely captures the raw, elemental processes of the natural world – here evoking the layered , grainy textures of geological formations. The track's titles both denote these geological processes and describe the composition's sonic behaviors and trajectories, conceptualized as a metaphor for the breakdown of love.

Michelle is joined by Joanna Mattrey (viola) and Lea Bertucci (alto saxophone), whose instruments chart melodic paths across these textures. These melodic figurations do not function as structural markers in the piece, nor do they merely elaborate the underlying texture; instead, they offer an alternate perspective of its dimensions: emerging as a kind of after-image of the seemingly static object, or the object's memory of its own dynamic state of becoming.

Focusing on the vocalisations and physical communication sounds of three bird species, it is comprised of field recordings of Grasshopper Warbler, Sedge Warbler (both Summer migrant breeders) and Snipe (resident breeder), alongside tuned percussion and synthesiser textures.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eAs a birdwatcher and sound recordist the communication and language of birds fascinates me. The singular sounds made by the these species (either by syrinx or feather) have mechanical, almost synthetic timbres. The Grasshopper Warbler’s continuous static reeling call, projected in a wide arc as it turns its head, creates a diffusion difficult to pinpoint to a specific location. The frenetic mimicry of the Sedge Warbler interspersed with its mechanical rattling very literally embodies sampling and the Cut-up. The Snipe with its uncanny ‘winnowing’ territorial projections made by the vibration of two tail-feathers during display dives is especially interesting as a non-vocal communication.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eBirds have been a continuous presence across human evolution and their calls are deeply culturally ingrained in us. It is precisely the ‘otherness’ of these particular sounds that I find so captivating.
