"Invited by the town of Hoeilaart and with the support of the Flemish Heritage Fund we create this special document: a CD and a 32 pages booklet. Through photography, text, music, and sound we log a unique and peculiar culture: the grape cultivation under glass in Hoeilaart, a small village just below Brussels. Step with us inside the greenhouse, inside the confined world of the greenhouse workers.

The cultivation of grapes under glass in Hoeilaart. A culture that has been growing for 150 years, give or take. Its fruit: table grapes, once feasted on in faraway places such as Russia, the British isles and America. This cultured architecture, wealth , beauty contests, fame, a coded row of values per parameter, a people. And silence!

Serrism happens under glass. Lots of it. In Hoeilaart – the glass village – were once more than 13,000 greenhouses. 13,000 enclosed worlds for the table grape to live, leave and die. Ostinato. Today, only a fraction of these greenhouses are still erect . Under the sympathetic rule of a unique variety: the serrist, world-builder under a glass bell.

This publication is about what it means to listen like glass. To listen to glass. To live as a grape. "

But you’re often stuck with a bitter aftertaste when you understand a bit more what is actually happening behind the colorful masque.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eWhen it comes to his music - and in contrast to aforementioned drawings - Dennis pencils a more piecemeal picture. His recordings and performances often feel like spliced excerpts. Strange sentences and funny remarks waiver by and interconnect. Musical symbols are casually thrown on the table. Instead of a clear picture, we now have the feeling of looking at a bunch of different doodles. Like... sometimes I have the feeling compared to how focussed Dennis works on his drawings, how unfocussed and sketchy he treats his music. We are simply thrown from emotion to emotion. From laughter to tears. It’s a bumpy ride. \u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eI’d like to imagine that Dennis constantly notates all the shards of conversation he picks up during his regular walks in the centre of Antwerp - a wormhole congested with characters, the one more tragic than the other. Most important, this is music how it could be: incomprehensible, hilarious, serious, ludicrous, well crafted, sloppy, non-genre. With a strong sense of personality. This matriarchal tradition among other things manifestates in the culture of the legendary Haenyeo – female divers for shellfish, octopus, fish et al. Two years ago Setaik Yim invited Christophe Piette; a Brussels based actor, filmmaker, - connaisseur and musical improviser; to the island to film the paintings of Myonghi, a South Korean visual artist that paints beautiful works exploring the hidden dimensions within nature. There’s not necessarily anthropomorphism at play, but one surely feels a manifestation and a devastating influence throughout the whole of the movie. A hissing and seductive presence. During the course of Christophe Piette's album we hear the dormant volcano Mount Hallasan (lit. high enough to haul the universe), Jeju’s centre and origin. The inhabitants of Jeju believe this mountain has mystical qualities and that it is the dwelling place of Gods and spirits. The mountain is also the core of Jeju’s ecology and its presence is heard all over the island and throughout this collection of composed sound.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBeing fond of the volcanic island myself, I love how the impressions we hear on this album perfectly constitute that specific small world. A world that’s equally tragic, problematic, and balanced. Something else coming to mind is Walter Marchetti’s Perpetuum Mobile (1981), a 'serenade' of a motorway in dialogue with a pond of frogs. Christophe Piette shares a similar attention for the everyday sound, where a passing truck, a random conversation, indeed frogs croaking, a dinner conversation, airport atmospheres, a bus ride, light restaurant jazz, and a band practice by the people of Doksu village are all having their status inside a certain reality; a reality that is now preserved for eternity.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn my personal trade, and in the development of the Edições CN catalogue, Christophe Piette was and is of great influence.
