Field Records has released a new work by SUGAI KEN, which expresses the one and only Japanese musique concrète.
This work was commissioned by the Dutch Embassy in Japan and was produced over a year.
In the 17th and 18th centuries, Japan closed its doors to the West due to seclusion, but as it shifted to a modern democracy in the 19th century, Dutch engineers began large-scale water management projects. Provided expertise to.One of the most prestigious projects was the hydraulic engineering project for the Tone River, which has a length of 322 km in Honshu.
In this work, we go around three points that traverse the Tone River, record environmental sounds using a normal microphone, binaural microphone, and underwater microphone, and express the changes in the scenery of the Tone River flowing into the Pacific Ocean.By juxtaposing these diverse recordings with his unique technique of synthesis, raw sounds and precisely shaped textures interact in an innocent, neutral space.
SUGAI'sDJ chartPlease also refer to it.
Caught somewhere between environmental sound studies and surrealist sonic architecture, SUGAI KEN helps mark the 30th release of Field Records with an ambitious new album. Commissioned by the Dutch Embassy in Tokyo, Tone River is the product of a year's intensive work between artist and label, created in part to examine the relationship between Japan and the Netherlands with regard to water management.
While its doors to the Western world were closed during the 17th and 18th centuries, Japan kept abreast of Western science via a Dutch trade post in the bay of Nagasaki. When the country changed from a feudal society to a modern democracy through the turn of the 19th century, Dutch engineers lent their expertise to large-scale water management projects. One of the most prestigious projects of the time was the Tone River, which stretches 322 kilometers across Honshu, Japan's largest island.
For this project, SUGAI KEN travelled to three points across the Tone River and used regular, binaural and underwater microphones to record environmental sounds, seeking to express the change in landscape of the river in its flow into the Pacific Ocean. On Tone River, these varied recordings are interspersed and juxtaposed with Ken's distinctive take on synthesis, where raw and precisely sculpted textures and tones interact in stark, neutral space.
On this conceptually rigorous, yet beguiling and free-flowing record, SUGAI KEN glides between the elemental and hyper-synthetic in a flexible exploration of sound and story.

The 5th installment of the folk song excavation series supervised by Yauyo Sanzan is a vertical bombing Bon dance tune for the floor, DROP ``Nanya Toyara'' from Ninohe City in the northern part of Iwate Prefecture!! I didn't know that the "current tense" of Bon Odori songs was so dangerous!!! Since 2019, when the coronavirus was rampant, folk song preservation societies in various places have stopped their activities and have stopped performing and practicing at Bon Odori and recitals. Even the meeting was forced to be cancelled. Along with this, we were forced to suspend the release of the folk song excavation of Yauyo x M. By sticking to the folk songs of the ``now,'' they had no choice but to stop releasing songs during the coronavirus pandemic, when singing stopped. In 2024, the situation gradually improved, and our release plan, which we had been working on even before the coronavirus, finally came to fruition. "Nanya Toyara", which will be released this time, is said to be the oldest Bon dance in Tohoku, widely passed down in the area that straddles the northern part of Iwate Prefecture and the former Nanbu domain territory of Aomori. This tranquil Bon dance, which repeats the single phrase ``nanya toyara'' over and over again, is known as the ``mystery song,'' and there are various theories about its origin. The most famous one is the ``Hebrew theory,'' which is said to be associated with the legend of Christ's tomb, but its origin is unknown. There are many Bon dance songs and work songs in the lineage of this song, such as ``Tanabe Oshimako,'' ``Torajosama,'' ``Tenma Miyoko,'' and even the Hokkaido representative folk song, ``Donan Bon Uta.'' It can be said to be one of the foundations of folk songs. This work includes three versions of "Nanyatoyara" recorded by the Ninohe City Nanyatoyara Preservation Society, which is active in Ninohe City, northern Iwate Prefecture: 2002 recording, 2015 recording, and 2023 recording. The overwhelming tension of the scene-specific version blows away the exoticism that has been associated with this song as a ``mysterious song.'' The lyrics are improvised and connected to the drums like a vertical bombing, making it an extremely dangerous song. Although calling itself a "preservation society," the Ninohe City Nanyatoyara Preservation Society, which is vigorously patting (improving and developing) Nanyatoyara into its modern form, has broken the stereotype that "folk songs = old stories" and restarted after overcoming the coronavirus pandemic. It is appropriate to be the first in the series of excavating traditional folk songs and M folk songs. This is the sound of the scene! Note: In this work, it is written as "Nanya Toyara", but it may also be written as "Nanya Doyara". This is a CD released by Polish field recording artists Bolesław Wawrzyn and Paweł Starzec on the Polish field recording label saamleng in 2019. Contains 5 field recordings collected in Croatia. Gatefold digipak specification. Below is an explanation by the label. 01. The Jasenovac concentration camp (often referred to as the ``Yugoslav Auschwitz'') was established in 1941 by the Independent State of Croatia and was run solely by the Ustase government. Most of the prisoners were slaughtered using makeshift tools made from leather gloves and agricultural knives, known as ``srbošeks'' (serb cutters). Over the years, estimates of the number of victims have varied from 3 to 140 million. The highest estimate is 10 people, most of whom are Serbs. The memorial site was established in 1990, just before Croatia's first democratic elections. 02. Yajinci Memorial Park was established in 1960 and designated as a cultural heritage site in 1986. One of the largest parks in Belgrade, it is currently used as a place for excursions and family reunions, as well as a large space for children to ride bicycles and scooters. This park was built on the site of a former Yugoslav military firing range. Every day from July 1941, 7 until the end of 15, Nazi forces executed people taken from the Belgrade concentration camp. It is estimated that between 1943 and 6 people were killed during that period. 5. Sazimiste concentration camp, also known as Judenlager Semlin, was operated by the SS Einsatzgruppen unit from October 8 to July 03. After World War II, the Yugoslav government announced that 1941 people passed through the camps during that time, half of whom were killed. The Serbian Helsinki Commission for Human Rights now claims that the death toll was exaggerated for political purposes and that the real number is around 10 prisoners and 1943 exterminators. Besides the monument and small cenotaph, all the buildings left behind or rebuilt after the war are still in use. In 7, the site was transformed into the headquarters and barracks of the Youth Workers. All remaining buildings are now being used by immigrants, possibly illegally. 10. The Topovske Shpe concentration camp was established on August 5, 2 and operated until the end of that year. During that time, between 1948 and 04 people were interned, of whom approximately 1941 were killed. The camp was abandoned by the communist regime for many years for political reasons, as most of the victims were Jews or Roma, and they were not communists or anti-fascist fighters. To this day, two barracks and part of the wall are still used illegally by some migrants. One of the barracks has a makeshift auto repair shop that can be heard on the recording. The first commemorative plaque was erected at the site in 8, following a controversy involving one of the region's wealthiest businessmen, who wanted to demolish the barracks and build a huge shopping mall and office building in its place. was. In 20, the plaque was stolen and the monument was once again forgotten. The new plates were installed just two weeks before our recording visit. Both city officials and Romani groups agreed to demolish the site. Probably after August 5000. 6500. The Monument to the Revolution of the People of Moslavina was built in Podgaric in 4300 on the project of Dusan Zamonya. It is dedicated to the victims of the 2 Croatian uprising and commemorates the 1 soldiers buried near the monument. ...
