Full Spectrum:

"Venezuelan sound artist and composer Gil Sansón returns to Full Spectrum with 'Confirmation Bias' – the sequel to his 2021 release, 'Impostor Syndrome.'

Recorded in 2022 after a period of self-doubt precipitated by the reception for 'Impostor Syndrome,' the underlying intention of the material presented on 'Confirmation Bias' is to both affirm and deny the title in the music: many of the same themes explored on the prior album return, alongside new elements that serve to communicate the same message in new ways…though this time around there's an undercurrent of cynicism or, perhaps, sarcasm compared to the more wistful overtones of the prior work.

Indeed, 'Confirmation Bias' follows a similar aesthetic blueprint: fragmented passages from impromptu studio sessions are lifted and recontextualized within additional structural components that help deliver or broader meaning. Guitars, cheap keyboards, and household electronics are scattered across the mix, placed on an even footing with bursts of radio static and concrète constructs. Indeed, 'Confirmation Bias' strikes a tenuous balance between avant folk, electro-acoustic improvisation, and contemporary composition tropes.

Sansón, for his part, realized early on in the production process that he couldn't achieve his goals by simply inserting avant garde flourishes into song structures, but that he could go much deeper by assembling elements that may or may not include elements that have a clear link to 'song,' in the broader sense; from there, he felt able to display disparate genre influences alongside one another transparently in a sense that wasn't so concerned with highlighting mere contrast.

The result is a fractured fever dream of a trip that feels especially relevant amid the ongoing enshittification of our shared culture, as we are all squeezed out to the margins like so much jam on over-buttered toast.
