While her practice typically centers on the manipulation of no-input mixer feedback systems in an effort to to plumb the rich intersections between noise and melody, drone and rhythm, indeterminacy and control, ‘Stick Control’ exists in a strange pocket dimension all its own.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eAs its creative seed, ‘Stick Control’ takes a set of otherwise unremarkable snare drills sourced from George Lawrence Stone’s legendary ‘Stick Control for the Snare Drummer’ – a book which has been referred to as “the Bible of drumming,” providing a training template for young percussionists since its original publication in 1935. Martin-Gray turns Stone’s rote patterns on their head, however, morphing them into a collection of stunningly warped explorations in sympathetic resonance and passionate minimalism.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eShe began by copying a few of her favorite exercises\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e to MIDI and used these sequences to trigger a series of tuned 808 samples, which were then beamed directly at a lone snare drum. This month, we are excited to present a towering collection of works from the duo of Sally Decker and Brendan Glasson entitled, An Opening.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eThe duo started collaborating in loose ensembles with other artists in the Bay Area, but their more focused creative efforts didn’t begin to take shape until they were invited by composer Chris Brown to record a piece for a curated series at San Francisco’s Center for New Music. Sally’s homemade network of electronic feedback loops and oscillators presented a natural counterpoint to Brendan’s infatuation with organs and slow, open melodies; but they hadn’t ever spent time formally integrating these constituent components.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eFor several weeks the pair convened and made sounds together in a rooftop room in Sally’s house that featured windows on all sides. These sessions gave rise to an intuitive working process that was more a harmony of forces than of tones – energetic vs. subdued, strong vs. weak, steady vs. chaotic. Eventually, the sprawling aural chasms of a-side track took form. They managed to present the piece in concert at the Center for New Music (from which\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\" class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e the recording takes its name), but the onset of the COVID pandemic and lockdown forced them into a totally different sort of creative exchange.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eNo longer able to work together in person, they began writing loose conceptual scores for one another. One of them would generate a series of “prompts” each week and the other had to interpret them, record them, and send back responses in the form of audio files. It was agreed that the prompts could be anything at all: notated music, a text score, an image, a sound, etc. The pair did this back-and-forth for many weeks. When enough material had been generated, they edited it down to the length of this tape. The b-side suite is thus informally called “A Response.”\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eIt’s a rather poetic end result – while the a-side came from a process of extensive in-person experimentation with sound, rich with the particular immediacy that improvising brings to a music-making process, the material made during shelter-in-place came from a very different relational process. While its roots were still in the collaborative dynamics the duo cultivated in person, now the “presence” of the other had to be found and felt within the scores themselves. One person’s prompt turned into the other person’s sonic form. Taking direction from the other influenced new ways to stretch and grow outside of their usual methods and approaches. Rather than the co-creation of making music live together, the work came from a more straightforward and methodical process of each person both directing the work, but also having to yield some agency. This month, we are excited to present a towering collection of works from the duo of Sally Decker and Brendan Glasson entitled, An Opening.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eThe duo started collaborating in loose ensembles with other artists in the Bay Area, but their more focused creative efforts didn’t begin to take shape until they were invited by composer Chris Brown to record a piece for a curated series at San Francisco’s Center for New Music. Sally’s homemade network of electronic feedback loops and oscillators presented a natural counterpoint to Brendan’s infatuation with organs and slow, open melodies; but they hadn’t ever spent time formally integrating these constituent components.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eFor several weeks the pair convened and made sounds together in a rooftop room in Sally’s house that featured windows on all sides. These sessions gave rise to an intuitive working process that was more a harmony of forces than of tones – energetic vs. subdued, strong vs. weak, steady vs. chaotic. Eventually, the sprawling aural chasms of a-side track took form. They managed to present the piece in concert at the Center for New Music (from which\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\" class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e the recording takes its name), but the onset of the COVID pandemic and lockdown forced them into a totally different sort of creative exchange.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eNo longer able to work together in person, they began writing loose conceptual scores for one another. One of them would generate a series of “prompts” each week and the other had to interpret them, record them, and send back responses in the form of audio files. It was agreed that the prompts could be anything at all: notated music, a text score, an image, a sound, etc. The pair did this back-and-forth for many weeks. When enough material had been generated, they edited it down to the length of this tape. The b-side suite is thus informally called “A Response.”\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eIt’s a rather poetic end result – while the a-side came from a process of extensive in-person experimentation with sound, rich with the particular immediacy that improvising brings to a music-making process, the material made during shelter-in-place came from a very different relational process. While its roots were still in the collaborative dynamics the duo cultivated in person, now the “presence” of the other had to be found and felt within the scores themselves. One person’s prompt turned into the other person’s sonic form. Taking direction from the other influenced new ways to stretch and grow outside of their usual methods and approaches. Rather than the co-creation of making music live together, the work came from a more straightforward and methodical process of each person both directing the work, but also having to yield some agency. The hundred-yard tunnel was blasted out of the middle of the mountain by the US Forest Service in 1942 to serve as a fireroad gateway to the summit of Mount Lowe. The result is an odd mélange of cosmic psychedelia and utopian idealism, all bound together by Weathers’ recent obsession with the Industry Workers of the World Little Red Songbook. A collection of union songs and anthems about reclaiming the means of production in an ongoing effort dismantle capitalism, the Little Red Songbook is an odd starting point for such immersive music; but considering Weathers’ current trajectory\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003e as an artist obsessed with regaining his sense of identity in the face of late-period capitalism, it comes as little surprise he would take inspiration from such a well.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003e“The album is an attempt to embody the transition I’m going through in Texas,” explains Weathers. “It’s an extension of the more moderate life-thru-death zone of Fuck Everybody. There are themes of intuitive symbolism – in that we create symbols for ourselves and constantly uncovering their meanings. So, I was drawing from markers in my own life as well as more traditional symbolic structures like those found in tarot. The result is an odd mélange of cosmic psychedelia and utopian idealism, all bound together by Weathers’ recent obsession with the Industry Workers of the World Little Red Songbook. A collection of union songs and anthems about reclaiming the means of production in an ongoing effort dismantle capitalism, the Little Red Songbook is an odd starting point for such immersive music; but considering Weathers’ current trajectory\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003e as an artist obsessed with regaining his sense of identity in the face of late-period capitalism, it comes as little surprise he would take inspiration from such a well.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003e“The album is an attempt to embody the transition I’m going through in Texas,” explains Weathers. “It’s an extension of the more moderate life-thru-death zone of Fuck Everybody. There are themes of intuitive symbolism – in that we create symbols for ourselves and constantly uncovering their meanings. So, I was drawing from markers in my own life as well as more traditional symbolic structures like those found in tarot.
