Rory Salter // On the Floor, by the Door CD

This work was created by British experimental musician Rory Salter aka Malvern Brume.is a CD released in January 2024..

The following is a commentary by the writer himself.

"The two main ideas behind the music are to take advantage of home and work situations. I recorded most of this song in a new apartment I moved into last year. That room has very interesting acoustics, and over the years it's no different than any other apartment I've lived in. I've been making music even though I live in the United States, so I wanted to create something that would really hear the sound of the place and surroundings I recorded it in. So a lot of my recording was done in different parts of my apartment, and I often went back to my apartment. A lot of the material was recorded while doing normal household chores, and a lot of the material was recorded while doing other tasks at the same time, so there was a lot of time spent running between rooms. It was long. The name of the track ``On the Floor, by the Door'' comes from the fact that a good part of it was recorded near the front door.In the same way, I incorporated my own work into the work. I work as a technician, and at night I work as a sound engineer two or three times a week.
I've been thinking (and talking a lot) about work and art-making lately, and I've been thinking about people bringing their day jobs to their art in ways that reuse work techniques, materials, time, etc. I'm really into the work that I found a way to do. So anyway I did a lot of stuff like this. I really thought about the skills I had acquired and made an effort to borrow equipment that I wouldn't have had otherwise. In the process, I also thought a lot about space and acoustics. In other words, I want the sound to exist within the space. Many of these practices are ones I developed and often talk about at work. Friends also appear in a relatively candid manner, appearing in various recordings. I think there is a desire to reach music for ``life'' that is a little mundane and the boundaries are blurred. "

Artist statement by Rory Salter :

"The two main ideas behind the music are to make use of domestic and work situations. Most of it was recorded in a new flat I moved into last year. The place had a really interesting acoustic and after so many years of making music in whatever flat I was living in I wanted to do something where you could really hear the place it was recorded/the surrounding area. So a lot of the recordings are done in different locations in the flat, and often re-played back into the flat and recorded using different speakers and microphones. A lot of material was recorded whilst performing usual domestic activities and would spend quite a lot of time running between rooms doing other tasks at the same time as recording. The name of the 'On the Floor, by the Door' track is because that's where I recorded a fair bit of it, by the front door. It's in a similar way that I used and included my job in the pieces. I work as a sound technician at a university in the day and as a sound engineer in the evenings a couple times a week. I've been thinking (and talking a lot of shit) about work and art making recently and I'm really into stuff where the persons found some way to include their day job in their art in a way that sort of re-purposes the skills, materials, time etc of work. So anyway I did a lot of this, really thinking about skills I've picked up and making the effort to borrow some really otherwise unattainable equipment. I thought a lot about space and acoustic-ness during the process so a lot of it again is about me wanting sound to exist within a space; reamping sounds into spaces, or recording synthesized sounds through different speakers positioned in ways to filter and alter the sound. A lot of these practices are things I've developed and talked about a lot at work. Friends also feature quite a bit in relatively candid ways and crop up in recordings here and there. I guess there's a desire to get to a point of a 'life' music, where it feels a bit everyday and blurs the line a bit, that's when things are most interesting to me."
