"EMS is famous for modules like Buchla and Serge, but it contained Evolution Synthesis' EVS-1, a super-unknown digital rack synth module. Really alien from forgotten '90s boxes and sampled modular jams. The result is a erratic tripping of mismatched circuits and digital chords, slipping between emotional fabrications and strictly logical music."

"Named after the mythological hybrid of the chimaera, Forces' first collection for mappa was put together in a similar fashion. The sounds all stem from a fruitful residency at Stockholm's EMS Elektronmusikstudion in May & June 2022, leading to a bounty of source material with which to build. The sounds and concepts are equally chimeric, stringing together disparate and unintuitive jams, the music mimicking the multi-limbed, sewn together beasts of both creative open source coding and destructive multinational concerns who hide their cores amid endless appendages. Moreau, Forces - aka Finnish artist Joonas Siren - weaves wildly varying attributes into something new, from short-circuiting 8-bit dream ambience to fractured digital groans, drones, and noisy freakouts.

Though EMS is best known for its Buchla and Serge modular systems, Forces went 'digital' and largely navigated a lesser-known synth rack one can wheel between studios, affectionately known as the '90s Wagon'. ,” explains Siren, “ like the super unknown EVS-1 by Evolution Synthesis, a UK company who only produced this one rack synth only and then vanished.” Some truly alien sounds emerge from Forces' creative misuse of forgotten 90s boxes and sampled modular jams. The result is an erratic trip through mismatched circuitry and digital codes, slipping between emotional artifice and harshly logical music.

The track titles stem from both famous mythological chimaeras and multinational arms dealing conglomerates. “Different quite sinister firms can operate in broad daylight, easily hiding their true nature. Many of these mega-corporations have different branches (like chimeric limbs) that are producing quite normal mundane every-day items, as well as mass-producing weapons.” A dedicated SuperCollider user too however, Siren states how open source coding snippets are also 'chimeric beings'. then building completely new work on some old idea,”Siren explains. Despite its misuses, there's also something hopeful in the malleability of ideas, and the ability to creatively collage the world as it is into something wholly new, even better."

This is a soundtrack work released by Martin Franklin and Michael O'Dempsey, core members of the British band Tuu, who were active in the 80s and 90s, on the British excavation label Infinite Expanse in July 2023. "Immersed in historical context, the sound consists of eerie tape loops, feedback, and '11s stomp box effects mixed with early digital synthesis. This is the story of a Polish Catholic priest who volunteered to die in his stead in July 80, when a prisoner escaped from the camp, and the second-in-command had 1941 prisoners starved to death in an underground bunker to prevent further escapes. When one of the chosen men, a young husband and father, cried out, Maximilian Kolbe volunteered to take his place, according to an eyewitness who was the janitor's assistant at the time. Kolbe is said to have prayed for the prisoners in his prison cell. Whenever the guards checked on Kolbe, he would stand or kneel in the middle of the cell and calmly greet the prisoners as they entered. After two weeks of starvation and lack of water, the guards wanted to empty the bunker and administered lethal injections to the remaining four prisoners. Kolbe died on August 7, 10. A few years later, he was beatified as a confessor of the faith by Pope Paul VI in 2 and canonized as a saint by Pope John Paul II in 3. From 4 to 1941, the production company Theater of Poland performed the play Kolbe, based on the book by Desmond Forristal, in Catholic churches throughout Europe. Some of the cassettes sold during the tour were recovered in Lyttelton, New Zealand and mastered in Brisbane, Australia in April 8.
