"Icy noise and techno minimalism from two of the underground's most prolific collaborators; Giugno (AKA Broken Plllar, artist Thomas Carney) and Reece Thomas (Alocasia Garden) sees out Shadow World's 2022 for the last Bandcamp Friday of the year.
7 tracks of caustic distortion, throbbing drum machine serialism and devastating synthpop hooks chart a cold northern-European winter like no other tape out this season. Intrinsically nocturnal, the high hats shimmer like shards from street lights and passing cars. Throbbing kickdrums and bass lurk in the shadows while synth pads and pianos hang like freezing fog around deserted streets before sunrise.
This is grainy early digital cinema played out through razor sharp filters and dubbed out delays, it feels like isolation or loneliness, surrounded by a vortex of other disconnected lives and stories. Separated by language, separated by understanding and separated by the hustle; often we mean to connect for weeks, months, years even, but those messages stay on 'read' and it gets harder to find the way back. As 'Gardens' comes to an exhausted, semi-conscious close on 'Fleeting Bird Calls Echo in the Castle,' the melodic refrains find us where started, perfectly looping back into opening track 'The Pleasure Gardens of Cairns,' stretching its arm out to bare the strain of another freezing cold day, alone."

What if a song’s seeming softness constitutes its biting edge? What if easeful, contemplative pleasure can radically alter our mindset? Our very role as worldly subjects? Drawing on the works of Lynn Margulis and our burgeoning understanding of the evolutionary role of biological mutualism (associations between species in which both species benefit), A Host For All Kinds of Life is a deeply entrenched and politically grounded song suite. What if a song’s seeming softness constitutes its biting edge? What if easeful, contemplative pleasure can radically alter our mindset? Our very role as worldly subjects? Drawing on the works of Lynn Margulis and our burgeoning understanding of the evolutionary role of biological mutualism (associations between species in which both species benefit), A Host For All Kinds of Life is a deeply entrenched and politically grounded song suite. In an age of widespread chaos caused by anthropogenic climate change, ``solastalgia'' (the longing and suffering experienced by individuals in response to environmental change/deterioration) has emerged as a convenient, semi-fashionable concept.But for many of us, there is a problem, a trap, an indescribable emptiness at the heart of this concept/premise.Especially for lifelong city dwellers who have become estranged from nature and yet understand the seriousness and complexity of the problem.How do we grieve?Founded by Olive Ardizzoni and now officially a duo project with long-time collaborator and close friend Michael Flanagan, Green-House is perhaps indirectly known for its exploratory, non-dogmatic nature. We are trying to address this gap in understanding in a new way. This is a soundtrack work released by Martin Franklin and Michael O'Dempsey, core members of the British band Tuu, who were active in the 80s and 90s, on the British excavation label Infinite Expanse in July 2023. "Immersed in historical context, the sound consists of eerie tape loops, feedback, and '11s stomp box effects mixed with early digital synthesis. This is the story of a Polish Catholic priest who volunteered to die in his stead in July 80, when a prisoner escaped from the camp, and the second-in-command had 1941 prisoners starved to death in an underground bunker to prevent further escapes. When one of the chosen men, a young husband and father, cried out, Maximilian Kolbe volunteered to take his place, according to an eyewitness who was the janitor's assistant at the time. Kolbe is said to have prayed for the prisoners in his prison cell. Whenever the guards checked on Kolbe, he would stand or kneel in the middle of the cell and calmly greet the prisoners as they entered. After two weeks of starvation and lack of water, the guards wanted to empty the bunker and administered lethal injections to the remaining four prisoners. Kolbe died on August 7, 10. A few years later, he was beatified as a confessor of the faith by Pope Paul VI in 2 and canonized as a saint by Pope John Paul II in 3. From 4 to 1941, the production company Theater of Poland performed the play Kolbe, based on the book by Desmond Forristal, in Catholic churches throughout Europe. Some of the cassettes sold during the tour were recovered in Lyttelton, New Zealand and mastered in Brisbane, Australia in April 8.
