Primitive Motion // Portrait Of An Atmosphere LP

Primitive Motion // Portrait Of An Atmosphere LP

Free-folk duo Primitive Motion from Brisbane, Australia released this record in March 2023 on the country's experimental/ambient label Room3.

Contains 6 experimental ambient folk songs using a large number of instruments without using spatial effects such as delay and reverb. Comes with DL code.

Below is an explanation by the author.

Portrait of an Atmosphere was recorded with the intention of creating a long piece of component parts as a suite of related compositions that are heard as a single narrative.Without the typical palette of reverbs and delays, we focus on sonic elements to achieve the sonic immersion that is at the heart of what we do.Despite the lack of such tools, it is fruitful for us to be able to enter the realm of illusions and get a sense of something 'other'.This album is the least Primitive Motion-like and most Primitive Motion-like album ever.

The title of the album is taken from Sandra's Cut Poems, an ongoing series of works in which she shrinks/cuts text from picked-up book pages to reach a poetic conclusion. In this context, it seems fitting that some of the recordings on this album also feel cropped, albeit more like collages than reductions. Most evidently on "Portrait IV", a piano track with snippets of studio improvisation, the haze finally lifts with a replay of the one-string guitar motif from "Portrait I".
