Artist statement by David Slowing:

"In my late 20's, during one of the darkest times of my life, I squatted inside an abandoned office building in the middle of nowhere in Florida for a year and a half. Ultimately faced with leaving, losing my mind, or worse, I packed up what little I had and left for NYC.

8 years later, I find myself living out of a different kind of strange office building, opposite in pretty much every way.This new office building is located wherever I want, thanks to covid and the newfound acceptance of remote work.It is also life -affirming, accompanied by my family.

Music for Abandoned Offices is a reflection on these experiences. I composed it in different locations while working remotely (LA, Austin, Hudson Valley) as a series of improvised ambient meditations.

It is a soundtrack for the thousands of empty square feet of commercial real estate that now lies dormant, and the various locations — coffee shops, bedrooms, porches — in which people now work."

My coworker said it was McCraven's \"Bitches Brew\" and went on about how Universal Beings had been inspired by the Miles Davis record, particularly producer Teo Macero's post-session editing work.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eI was really intrigued. I thought I knew Bitches Brew but I had no idea there were all these tape cuts everywhere and even some actual tape loops. All the starts and stops I assumed were part of the live sessions.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eAs I did some more reading I gradually got the idea to dig back into my vault of tape loops and put together an album based on edits and the sequencing of musical fragments, odds and ends.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eThe actual loops didn't exist in physical form any longer because of my habit of throwing out the tape and reusing the cassette shells over and over again with freshly spliced tape.
