The following is a commentary by the writer himself.

"Porous spaces, or more precisely () complexes of holes (meaning degenerate wholeness), speed up in a solid body like the Earth and cause a certain overthrow. Holes are It unfolds within the solid matrix as an ambiguous entity that oscillates between depth and depth, fundamentally destroying the integrity and wholeness of the latter through perforations and terminal voids. Curation destroys the coherence between the circumferential surface and the solidity. The process of degenerating a solid body by destroying the coherence of the surface is called ungrounding. In other words, the process of degenerating a solid body by destroying the coherence of the surface is called ungrounding. The process degenerates the whole into an endless hollow body - irreducible to nothing - and damages the very coherence between surface and solid. (Reza Negarestani, Cyclopedia)

(Hall Complex was written for garden units seeking a work defined by exploration and a space in which to make decisions. Navigate through, around, and across many pages of material, including notation and strategies.

It would be worst if a work like this simply "re-presented" Negareani's text. Is it possible for a work to present a state of being that is not grounded or organized? In the first place, was the work actually a solid matrix? "

Artist statement by Ben Zucker:

'Holey Space, or more accurately ( )hole complex (connoting a degenerate wholeness), speeds up and triggers a particular subversion in solid bodies such as earth. It unfolds holes as ambiguous entities -- oscillating between surface and depth -- within solid matrices , fundamentally corrupting the latter's consolidation and wholeness through perforations and terminal porosities. For a solid body, the vermiculation of holes undermines the coherency between the circumferential surfaces and its solidity. The process of degenerating a solid body by corrupting the coherency of its surfaces is called ungrounding. In other words, the process of ungrounding degenerates the whole into an endless hollow body -- irreducible to nothingness -- and damages the coherency between the surfaces and the solid body in itself.' (Reza Negarestani, Cyclonopedia)

( )hole complex was written for Garden Unit, who sought a piece defined by exploration, and the space to make decisions within it. They move through, around, and across many pages of material, which include a number of notational methods and strategies for re-interpreting pages on reentry.

The worst possible thing would be for a piece like this to just 're(-)present' Negarestani's writing–I have done my best to work its ambiguities and schemas into multiple layers of composition, interpretation, and production. Can a piece actually stage its own ungrounding, its own uncohering? Was a work ever actually a solid matrice to begin with? "
