"This compilation takes us on a journey to the coast of Colombia, where the passion for African music burns. You can't understand this love unless you first look to San Basilio de Palenque. San Basilio de Palenque was the first free city in colonial Latin America, founded in 1691 as a refuge and place of self-government for black slaves, just 50 kilometers from Cartagena de Indias. It is a place where pride in African traditions and culture is preserved.
The Afro-Caribbean's connection to their roots has given rise to the artisanal, high-powered sound system found in Jamaica, the pico.These music lovers have a keen ear for African melodies and have created a vibrant collector's scene that brings the Afro sound to the streets of Barranquilla, Cartagena and Santa Marta.This compilation showcases the best of Benga music in Kenya, a unique style with a unique guitar picking method using traditional instruments such as Nyatiti and Oltu.From carefully guarded "exclusives" to piconemas that change song names in Spanish based on lyrics and dancefloor reaction, you'll learn all about the history and stories behind these African tracks.
The project was led by Spanish record collector Joan Pujol, AKA Golfo De Guinea, with help from Barranquilla-born musicologist Don Alirio, who provided a coastal perspective, and song selection and securing the rights. A team of passionate music lovers, including Kenyan DJ, collector and Benga advocate George Ouma.The result is a compilation that captures the joy and energy of sub-Saharan polyrhythms.Sit back, turn up the volume, and let yourself be transported to the lively streets of the Colombian coast and the shores of Lake Victoria.
