"It is our great honor to release the first of four memoirs by DJ ZNOBIA, one of Africa's most influential musicians of the past 30 years, the pioneer and originator of kuduro and tarahinha.DJ ZNOBIA, a street music genius and an important visionary of Angolan digital music modernism, is also its inventor.

Nyege Nyege Tapes looks through the more than 700 tracks in DJ ZNOBIA's archives (though it's said that twice as many are lost) and chronicles his musical career from the late 2s to the mid-1990s. Looking back over the entire work.DJ ZNOBIA was born Sebastián López in 2000, from Museke (Shunt Town) in Barrio de l'Angell in Luanda, the capital of Angola.

In the late 1990s, DJ ZNOBIA embarked on a journey to create a new genre that captured the energy and spirit of South West Africa, the second most Portuguese-speaking country in the world after Brazil.

DJ ZNOBIA initially gained fame as a dancer who particularly liked Michael Jackson, but later taught himself to produce with Fruity Loops.Inspired by the fusion of Angolan traditional rhythms and electronic beats, he began experimenting with different sounds and styles.As a result of his tireless efforts, he eventually developed kuduro, a genre that revolutionized the Angolan music scene.

Kuduro, which means "hard ass" in Portuguese, combines elements of traditional Angolan music such as semba, chirapanga, and cazucta with contemporary electro beats to create a high-energy, infectious sound. Through his innovative use of synthesizers, drum machines, and sampled vocals, DJ ZNOBIA gave Kuduro a unique personality, quickly becoming recognized as a pioneer of the genre and a leading producer. .The fact that much of his work took place during Angola's brutal civil war, which only ended in 2002, makes his story all the more remarkable.

With his groundbreaking productions, DJ ZNOBIA paved the way for the wide spread of kuduro not only in Angola but also internationally, including in the United States and Europe.Tracks like his "Batida 13 Horas" became anthems for the genre, and collaborations with local artists helped push Kuduro into the mainstream.Cuduro has had a huge influence on Portugal's Afro-diaspora community, particularly Principe disco DJs and producers, including DJ Marfox, DJ Nervoso and Niggafox. Kuduro first appeared on the international scene in 2008, when British-Sri Lankan rap superstar MIA released the single "Sound of Kuduro" from MIA's 2007 album Kala. It was when ZNOBIA collaborated with Braca Son Sistema.

DJ ZNOBIA's influence as a producer, DJ, MC and public figure has had a profound impact on Angolan culture over the past 30 years.He is also considered one of the pioneers of tarahinha, a cousin of kizomba and a wildly popular genre of sexy, percussive music and dance."

"A massive honor to be releasing the first in a four volume retrospective of one of Africa's most influential musicians of the last 30 years - kuduro and tarraxinha pioneer and originator DJ Znobia. A genius of street music and the pivotal visionary of Angola's digital musical modernism, Znobia is the inventor.

Nyege Nyege Tapes went through over 700 tracks in Znobia's archive (with double that number reputed to have been lost) to prepare a 4 Volume retrospective of his musical output from the late 90s to mid 2000s. Hailing from the musseke - or shantytown - of Barrio Do Rangel in the Angolan capital of Luanda, DJ Znobia was born Sebastião Lopes in 1979.

In 2008, kuduro first arrived on the international scene, when British-Sri Lankan rap superstar MIA collaborated with Znobia and Buraka Son Sistema on the single Sound of Kuduro which appeared on MIA's 2007 album Kala.


DJ Znobia's influence as a producer, DJ, MC and public figure has had a great imprint in Angolan culture for the better part of the last three decades. He is also considered one of the pioneers of the hugely popular tarraxinha genre of music and dance; the sexy, percussive cousin of kizomba; the name means “little screw/ screwdriver”. "
