Arto Lindsay // 7 Types of Ambiguity - A Parade LP

This is a record released by the famous American guitarist/experimental musician Arto Lindsay from Switzerland's No Salad Records in February 2024. A 2-page booklet is included.

"Arto Lindsay's '7 Types of Ambiguity - A Parade' will be installed at ECAL/University of Art and Design in Lausanne, Switzerland in 2022 as part of the research project 'Phantom Power' led by Thibaut Walter and Stefan Klopf. This is a stereo mix of an original sound installation. The idea was to recreate a carnival parade that Arto Lindsay had witnessed many times on the streets of Bahia, Brazil, in a white cube using only sound. Complex stories told overheard or imagined, small blocks of musicians crossing the street with truck-mounted blast systems, religious rhythms mingling with folk traditions, class struggles and race at the street level. struggle, "a classic example of the close proximity of sexuality and religion, tradition and novelty, and sites of real social innovation," and the sidelines in which all of them are fully part or subject of the whole. How can we recreate the impact it has on people?

With the story of the parade in mind, Arto Lindsay visits Salvador de Bahia and meets four musicians (three of whom he has worked with before) at Terreiro, an Afro-Brazilian religious temple. We recorded excerpts together. These mixed tracks were created as direct sound sculptures in a 4-channel immersive installation in a room in Lausanne, depicting the room itself, hallucinations, weather patterns and locations, for example when a parade stops during a rain shower, or when waves It adds layers of meaning, such as when you get so close to the ocean that you can't hear the percussion. "

"Arto Lindsay's 7 Types of Ambiguity - A Parade is a stereo mix of an original sound installation that was installed at ECAL / University of Arts and Design, Lausanne, Switzerland, in 2022 as part of a research project led by Thibault Walter and Stéphane Kropf called Phantom Power. The idea was simple, and yet the process and level of collaborative work implied was enormous: how to recreate a carnival parade -of the kind Arto had witnessed in the streets of Bahia in Brazil numerous times- inside a white cube and using only sound. How to replicate the complex intrications of those stories, heard or fantasized, the smaller blocos of musicians crossing the path of blasting sound systems mounted on trucks, those religious rythmes mingling with popular traditions, class and race struggle at street level " prime example of the proximity of sexuality and religion, of tradition and novelty and a place for true social innovation " and the effect it all has on the bystanders that are completely part, or even become the subjects of the whole?
Arto went to Salvador de Bahia with a narrative of a parade in his mind, and recorded excerpts in a terreiro, a temple of Afro-Brazilian religion, with four musicians leader of blocos, three of which he had previously worked with.
