Dutchambient workHome/Designer Machinefabriek and clarinetist Monika Bugajny released a collaborative CD in July 2023.

Reinterpreted and reconstructed music by Debussy, Messiaen, Brahms, and Stravinsky

The following is a commentary by the writer himself.

"This album would not be possible without clarinetist Gareth Davis, with whom I have collaborated on several occasions. He was working with Monika Bugajny when I asked him to join my + album. She found out about my project and asked if I could be a part of it, I said yes and remade her beautiful clarinet recording into a ghostly one-minute piece.

Apparently, the song I made was good enough for Monika Bugajny, and she suggested an even more elaborate collaboration. Her suggestion was to work in the same way again, this time using a classical piece as a starting point.Again I couldn't refuse and left!

Debussy, Messiaen, Brahms, Stravinsky... Who would have thought these songs would be on the Machinefabrik album! Monika Bugajny reinterprets eight classics, beautifully performed and recorded. And I layered, cut, and manipulated that material into a track on Recytle: half an hour of moody, woozy clarinet and electronics.

If you want a faithful recreation of Debussy's 'Première Rhapsodie', this is clearly not the release for you.But I hope the songs on Recytle will be interesting companions to the original material. "

Artist statement by Machinefabriek:

"This album wouldn't exist without clarinetist Gareth Davis, with whom I've collaborated several times. When I asked him to participate on my + album, he was working with Monika Bugajny. She got wind of my project and asked if she could join I agreed and reworked her beautiful clarinet recording into a ghostly one-minute piece.

Apparently my concoction was convincing enough for Monika to propose another, more elaborate collaboration. Her suggestion was to use the same working method again, but this time with classical pieces as a starting point. Again I couldn't say no, and off we went !

Debussy, Messiaen, Brahms, Stravinsky… who would ever thought to see these on a Machinefabriek album! Well, they're not excactly recognizable as such, but still… Monika reinterpreted eight classical pieces, beautifully played and recorded. , and manipulated the material into the tracks you'll find on Recytle (see what I did there?): 30 minutes of moody and woozy clarinet/electronics vignettes.

If you're looking for a faithful rendition of Debussy's Première Rhapsodie, this is obviously not your go-to release. But in their own right I hope the tracks on Recytle might offer an intriguing counterpoint to their originals."
