This work is the debut cassette released in April 2024 by Grady Steele, an ambient folk writer from London, England. "Fragments of rubble wash up on a fog-shrouded coastline. The satisfaction of eternally searching for solace. Trapped atop a lighthouse somewhere on a nameless isle, Grady Steele lies within range of a beacon. A sound system made of driftwood and discarded car stereos is carefully pieced together and painstakingly carried to the top of the obelisk, while a Spanish guitar plays an arpeggio. Flowing in a phasing loop through the deep sea, layering, sometimes creating faults, stopping, recording, and starting again. There's always a phosphorescent glow on the obelisk. The first album to feature (at least prominently) these six songs, while sketchy, they leave a memorable imprint of their source material, burning into your retina like the headlights of a passing car. Although this is Grady Steele's debut, it's not his first time working with sound, having spent the past decade running one of London's most important sound systems. The warm, melancholic tones of the Spanish guitar can be heard in almost all of the songs, and are sometimes intentionally distorted. The juxtaposition includes things that look like they were recorded on an iPhone in a hurry, and a drum machine left in the back of the studio, pulled out for a take or two, and then shelved again. The way the '6s voice imitator pads shine on the endurance is reminiscent of John T. Gast's early studio takes, and the synergy and precision of the guitar layering is reminiscent of Fuck Buttons' studio equipment.
